93.5 KWIE FM ONTARIO

The new 93.5 the flow is here. Its another hot 92.3 part 2 for the IE. It plays the same music as 92.3fm and has the same voiceover that Hot use. Thats great, like we need another old school and rb station out here. :'(

I cant believe in a # 2 market that L.A. cant hold on to an Urban Station.

Just doesnt make any sense. But like v-100 both the beat and the flow will fold within a year tops.

The beat will not out do kjlh or hot 92.3. The flow with no personalites may fold even sooner.

Whlie the beat has nothing but syndicated shows. That wont work ither. We are not in tin buck two? We are in So. Cal.

Los Angeles is 7.5% Black. It's possible in the 2010 Census, that will dip to 6%. How do you think an Urban station is going to survive in a market where Hispanics may outnumber blacks maybe 8 to 1? There's just no growth potential for a format that predominately attracts a black audience in Los Angeles. Urban is going the way of Dance. It just won't work in this market.

We are already using the 2007 Census update to get the 7.5% figure... it is unlikely that the percent would go much below 7% in the next two years.

Urban can definitely work, but for fewer stations. A significant portion of Black listening goes to stations ranging from KTWV to KFI, but there are going to be enough Black shares in sales demos to support several stations.

If that statement of yours was true, stations that heavily invested in courting blacks, such as Power 106 and Hot 92.3, would be doing much better than they are in the PPM. There is no room for more than ONE Urban or Urban AC in this town (just one, not one of each), period. Plus with percent of blacks continuing their exodus, particularly younger blacks, there is no growth potential. We'll see if todays 2007 estimates match the hard facts of 2010 Census.

How many names are you going to use to try to post, again, after you have been ejected under the prior name? Do you think we are all such idiots that we do not know who you are?

The Claritas based population estimates have been very accurate... just look back at the 1999 estimates prior to the decennial census and you can see that they were much better than the U.S. Census estimate; Arbitron uses Claritas.

Neither Power nor Hot are Black stations. They are multi-ethnic stations and i remind you that the best days of the Beat were when it did the "no color lines" imaging. You will find both of those stations have more Hispanic listeners than Black because they are not urban stations per se. Those two stations do, though, reduce the pool for the pure urban players.

David,

I do agree with you with the Beat comment. Those were the best days. It still had an urban feel to it. Which is part of the reason why they had such sucess. Another big reason was SUMMERJAM. Back then SUMMERJAM had all ethinic backgrounds. I havent really had any interest in going to Power House becasue of it being mostly a latino fan base. I came across an article that said that more Blacks listen to Hot 92 than Latino. Figures can be misleading at times. When i hear callers more times than not its Latinos that are calling in.
Kday was and is trying to bring back that feel of no color lines. But beacause its now Urban A/C, Along with shows that are syndicated as well as tape delayed, its gonna strugle lasting any lenth of time.

The best days of "The Beat" were the first few years, not the "No Color Lines" years. Those years are where "The Beat" began to lose its focus as a Southern California radio station. Keith Naftlay just made it a near carbon-copy of KMEL which it should never have been. This is Southern California, not San Francisco. In retrospect, that was the beginning of the end of "The Beat".

Frank Miniaci was the one who had it right during the Liz Kiley days. The Beat toppled Power 106 and put a real scare into KIIS to the point they modified their music. The Beat first achieved #1 25-54 status during Liz and Frank's days. Then the addition of John London & the House Party really put "The Beat" on the map. It's too bad it didn't continue on that path as today KIIS would be history and "The Beat" would be the #1 station in L.A.. Mike Stradford and John Monds are to blame for making the station too Black and too Urban. Neither spent much time focusing on the station being their hobby was "schmoozing" record people and record artists. Naftaly was brought in to rescue the station, which he did, but even he could see the handwriting on the wall and left earlier than expected. His second in command, Harold Austin,(who was forced onto John Monds as MD), had no on-air or real radio experience. Just being an intern turned music coordinator doesn't give you the experience to program a Los Angeles station. Austin was a loser at every station he touched in L.A.. He, along with a personal problem ridden Steve Smith, were final reasons why "The Beat" failed under AMFM and was sold off to Radio One.

Im talking about The John London years.

This is when the beat was on top of their game

The Lineup of John London & the house party Mornings
Diana Steele midday Old school lunch mix was the best Middays
Theo and people like Dj Quik's Afternoon drops Afternoons
Julio G 9 oclock bomb to Wesside Radio on Friday's Evenings
Night Beat with Kevin Nash Nighttime
The Wake up Show on weekends uncensored freestyles. Also the Mixmastershow with Julio & Tony G.

The Beat couldnt be touched back then. Especially when they had SUMMER JAM At Verizon Wireless. From 94-02

Do we know if 93.5 KWIE FM The Flo will have DJ's? If so, do we know who they have in mind? I think this should be interesting. And will KWIE FM give the long time #1 rated 99.1 KGGI a run for there money?

From what I understand it will be 100 percent automated with no voice tracking.

An article with an interview of Magic owner Don McCoy in the Riverside Press Enterprise (He is from Riverside) mentioned jocks would be added in 90 days.

Don't hold your breath, look at all the other things that were supposed to happen with KDAY etc....I especially enjoyed the rating predictions. Whoops. Good for a laugh.

Is that because Roy left? He insisted that it would be jockless forever.

Another question: Does anyone know if KWIE has an online stream? KDAY does, but I can’t find one for KWIE. I’m curious because I’d like to hear what “Flow 93.5” sounds like. If there’s no stream, does anyone know where I can find a recent playlist? Thanks.
