93.5 "The Outlaw"? When did this happen?

I'm delighted that our small effort at KBHT has inspired such a vigorous discussion. This especially among such a learned group of professionals as yourselves.

First please know that the format we are going for is not intended as a country/red dirt/classic rock mix. We are simply under staffed at this point and the work load with respect to adding music to the click is staggering. Carla and I share programing, ops, morning show production & execution, traffic, billing, and toilet cleaning duties. Upper management is only now attempting to build a sales force. It's a hard pull as you might imagine but (God forgive us) we're suckers for it...

Our programing intentions lean toward classic rock with a big dash of "rock based" Texas music. (There are some terrific Texas rockers out there by the way. All they need is a little recognition and if an occasional spin will help them...we're down!)

I worked a classic rock format when it was called "progressive rock and then later album rock" back in the days when FM was just coming into it's own.
Our music choices (early on) have been based on what was played back then. And so, we have included cuts from artists like Country Joe and the Fish, New Riders of the Purple Sage, Bob Dylan, and others who opened the way for Lynard Skynard and other "Southern Rockers". Believe me, I've played a lot of L.S. on classic rock sticks.
It occurred to me that in order to build a strong house, one must first build a strong foundation. We are not smart enough to invent a new wheel. We just have an overwhelming desire to hear it all again...the way it was.

Back in the day, it was more than just one or two hits by The Stones, Cream, Deep Purple, and Grand Funk etc. It was also a nice blend of Joe Cocker, John Baldry, Leon Russel & Janis Joplin (Texans by the way), John Prine, Mason Profit...well you get my drift.
When was the last time you heard "Shanty" by Johnathan Edwards or Taj Mahal's "Aint nobody's business but my own" on the air?
Every one spins "Stairway to Heaven" but rarely will you hear anything else from the album... What a shame & a waste.

We toss a lot of blues into the mix (like we did back then) as well. Delbert McClinton, JJ Cale, Brian Trower and other blues classified performers are prominent in our line up. And as we load one unit at a time (between other duties) we get closer to the sound we're looking for. It is our sincere hope that you will enjoy the final product and we welcome your suggestions, input, and critique.

Carla Leigh and I are not about the money. Smarter people than us will tackle that end. We are about the entertainment value and it's effect on our small but growing group of listeners. I hope that you will join them...

Much love to all

Thanks for the post, and for confirming at least some of my observations about the format (as well as for correcting some others). I'm in the fringe of the KBHT coverage area most of the time but I've found it worthy of a preset.

Now there's a name that evokes memories of the legendary pioneer of Album Rock radio in Dallas, KZEW the ZOO (I worked at their competitor for a number of years). It would be really nice to hear "Don't try to lay no boogie woogie on the king of rock and roll" from Long John. But hey, you've probably already thought of it!

"Don't try to lay...." has been in the click for some time now. Thanks for the pre-set JD. I hope that you will be patient with us...we are an ("overworked") work in progress.
Jimmy...
