93.5 WFQR has changed it's call sign to WHYA

Although no official announcement has been made, on August 17th WFQR changed its calls to WHYA. No format or staff has been announced yet. I'm thinking that John Garabedian will probably end the simulcast once the studios are built. It would be cool if WHYA changed it's format to something interesting like Top 40. He could put the Open House Party and local shows on the station that would be cool. 8)

Guessing that refers to HYAnnis. (I think the name of that particular Barnstable village comes from an
Indian named Iyannough and there's a road by that name in town...)

Yep, Iyannough was a native american sachem from the Cummaquid tribe.

The calls were applied for well over a month ago, the sale closed last week. All three stations also have pending applications for some nice signal upgrades. WPXC, WFRQ, and WHYA will also be moving into great new studios in Hyannis sometime in September.

It looks like 101.1 and 93.5 aren't playing the same music 101.1 WHYA is playing Lite Rock music and 93.5 WFRQ is playing Variety music. Their both still using ''Frank'', Im confused? ???

False Alarm

WHYA and WFRQ are still simulcasting each other for now. I don't know what happened. At first the station said ''93.5 Frank Fm'', and then I went up the dial to 101.1 WHYA and it says ''101.1 and 93.5 Frank FM''. I found out that 93.5 WFRQ is a couple minutes ahead of 101.1 WHYA. That's why it seemed as if they went through a format change.

My friend jlehmann and I have been listening to both 93.5 and 101.1 for the past half hour. It appears that both stations are running the same programming, but 101.1 is delayed as of this post by 20 minutes. For example, 93.5 played the dual legal ID at 9pm into an Usher song. Just now at 9:20pm, 101.1 played that same legal ID into the Usher song. What is airing on 93.5 is what is actually going over the web stream.

My guess is that the two frequencies split from the simulcast today and they are both running their own automation using the same playlist (albeit 101.1 being behind by 20 minutes in error). This could make sense if in fact 101.1 will be launching a new format soon, since the WFRQ call was moved to 93.5 recently and 101.1 is now WHYA.

Update: I am almost positive that both 93.5 and 101.1 are running from different automation sources, as on 93.5 about 20 minutes ago, I heard a dead-seg into an Adele song. Just now on 101.1, I heard a sweeper meant to go into a stopset (empty spot load) followed by a sweepstarter into the same Adele song. Same playlist, but the different elements in between hint that it's running on two separate machines.

Sounds pretty boring. Cool 102 should go AAA, they are practically there now

It looks like 101.1 has a Construction Permit to move to the same tower that co-owned Pixy-103 is on.

Correct. I've been keeping track of the recent changes and can report this:

On August 17, 2012, Codcomm changed the call sign on 93.5 from WFQR to WHYA. On September 5, 2012, the call signs of 93.5 and 101.1 were then swapped. 93.5 was changed from WHYA to WFRQ and 101.1 was changed from WFRQ to WHYA. An FCC construction permit has been granted to move 101.1 from Mashpee to Barnstable at the tower of sister station WPXC, where it will drop power (from 6 kW to 2.9 kW) but raise its antenna from 272' to 463'. In another pending FCC application, 93.5 will move from Brewster to Dennis, where it will change to a directional pattern to protect adjacent station WSNE, but raise power (from 3 kW to 6 kW).

As of today, they have also introduced a new voiceover talent. I've only heard a few liners in his voice (the old sweepers are still airing), but they include a new top of hour and a sweepstarter. I am not sure of his name, but he also voice 96.5 TIC in Hartford and had previously voiced Mix 98.5 in the early 2000s.

In case anyone is wondering why I am so interested in these changes, it's simply that Frank FM has been my favorite station for the past few years and I listen to it daily. Lately, they have also tweaked the format as well. I am not hearing any '70s songs and the '90s/2000s/recurrents/currents are being played more frequently. I am not liking that tweak, but I still continue to listen to the station.

101.1 WHYA going to end the simulcast with 93.5 WFRQ probably once the new studios are completed and take on a new format.

93.5 WFRQ is undergoing a little bit of format tweak, dropping 70's music and mostly playing 80's/90's/00's Music on their playlist.

102.9 WPXC is not going to change their format or staff. Their only going from 3,100 watts to 6,800 watts.

Those are the format changes that Codcomm are making, nothing is really going on with 102.9 WPXC other than going from 3.1 KW to 6.8 KW. 101.1 WHYA and 93.5 WFRQ are the only ones that are going through the most changes. The only thing i'm wondering is what will be the new format and staff on WHYA 101.1.

Re: 93.5 Frank-FM's new format

Frank FM is no longer playing 70's or 80's Vareity music. Their now playing 90's/00's music. I heard the new voiceover on Frank yesterday. It sounds better than the older Voice-over.
