Terrestrial signals: WAAF must do well for them or it would have been taken off by now. It's on 97.7
to help them reach Boston. One person commented on Boston Radio Watch that maybe they could put
WEEI on 107.3 to help it reach Central MA but supposedly 93.7 isn't too bad and they have other stations
to help (incl. the 105.5, though supp. there's still at pirate on that freq in Worc.). If enough people
supported "Mike" maybe they could put that on 97.7 but it would keep many people from hearing WAAF.
Or keep AAF on 97.7 and move the 107.3 to Mike...or maybe put RKO on 107.3 to solve the metro west
problem. (RKO has CRN to help with Howie's show, and the syndie shows like Savage may be on in
Worc or Fitchburg (WPKZ?). I'd think their main concern is AM and PM drive and right now the only
problem may be the first part of the morning show, west of town. Howie, covered.
And if not yes they could put it on...
HD Radio. (RKO actually may be on the 107.3 HD-3 I think)But how many people have them, despite all the ads? It might help some, sure. But most people haven't bought an HD radio and may not plan to. Suppose, for example, Ent. announced
"Hey we're putting RKO or Mike on 97.7's HD2; get an HD radio to enjoy it!" How many people
might buy one? If anything putting RKO on any of their HD2s would help recep, and since the
prob. is mostly to the west, the HD2 of 107.3 would make a lot of sense--or 93.7. Or 97.7.
For now btw 97.7's HD2 still has WEEI, and I think 93.7's HD2 does as well. I can barely pick up
the main signal of 107.3 so I don't know what's on their HD 2.
Does Funkytown make money? Would Mike on HD2 make money? How about putting RKO there;
I guess it would please some listeners.
Greater Media knows some fans like classic country; in addition to their Sun morning show they have
the HD2 of WKLB running it (also a webstream) since they don't exactly have another station to
run it on. (I suppose if they had an AM like 1150, 830, 1260, etc, that could have been used for it.
It's great for HD radio listeners but how many people have those gadgets, and how many people
would go out an buy one just for it? Someone like me has it (and also sat. radio) but is there
intense demand? And supp. you can't go into a Best Buy or Radio Shack and buy one off the shelf
anymore (or there are plans to take them off shelves and make them order-only)
So Ent. could put RKO, or Mike, or whatever on an HD2 and please some people, sure. But what
percentage of radio listeners have an HD radio now...one?
I will say this: RKO does come in to some extent at my workplace but on the workroom floor it's not easy. To hear Howie's last hour I put a $20 mini boombox at an area where it does come in without much
interference and use a mini-FM transmitter set to 88.5, 88.7, etc. If they put RKO on 93.7's HD 2
I could probably pick that up on workroom floor.
