93.7 is On

Nice! Don't know who posted this a few months back...but good scoop on that!

I'm sure the Thrashers will be happy to be on an FM now too...

Is the FCC now letting translators simul AMs directly, or is one of the Cumulus stations carrying WCNN on an HD signal (similar to 99X)? RecNet lists the parent station as WWWQ. The WCNN TOH ID made no mention of the translator or an HD signal.

I'd expect a TOH ID of something like "WCNN North Atlanta, WWWQ-HDx Atlanta, W229AG Sandy Plains". Yes, I know that translators don't have to be ID'd every hour.

this is awesome....i am getting a nice signal in Stockbridge..

Rebroadcasting the HD-3 signal of its WWWQ (99.7).

AFAIK AM stations can be directly rebroadcast on translators now, so I dunno why they'd go through the trouble of listing the (non existent) WWWQ HD3 as the source.

Over in Alabama, there are quite a few AMs on FM translators now.

I had thought the same, but the way it has been explained to me is that there are certain restrictions in terms of coverage for broadcasting an AM on an FM Translator that can be bypassed by using the HD-Multicast Channel as an intermediary.

In this case, the allowable area (60dbu contour) for a translator of 99.7 is much larger than what would be allowed for 680. Translators are limited to 250 watts, but the height is not limited, except that the translator's 60 dbu contour can't exceed the parent station's 60 dbu contour. In their case, they can run it at 1000 feet, giving it coverage that is compar5able to a class A (on paper anyway).

Another advantage of using and HD subchannel is that AM and FM programming could be split in case of a programming conflict. Down the road, if they found that most of the listening was on the translator, they could get rid of the AM signal or downgrade it without affecting the translator.

One would be sound quality.

>One would be sound quality.

No, it is no longer necessary to feed the translator with an air signal. It is necessary as I understand it to cease operation of the translator if the repeated signal goes off air for a stated period... which somebody said was 24 hours, but you'd need to check that.

Honestly these translators sound fuller and richer than the big signals?????? And they cover a surprisingly huge area.

Ahhh. Did not know that. Seems like a sensible rule.

Kind of surprised 680 hasn't made the big announcement--WSB flipped The Beat and got their promo machine running immediately, before all the processing tweaks were done.

"Major announcement" coming up on The Rude Awakening on Monday morning...assuming this is it. 680 The Fan seems to love their "major announcements"!

Interested to see if this pays dividends for them in ratings once the word is out, and they get through a slower Holiday time period for sports radio.
