I was just thinking that it was about February or March of 2003 when the current LMA on what is now KWNZ started. Typical Flinn agreements are 36-60 months in length.Assuming that this is a 36 month agreement, I wonder if the current agreement holder is going to renew or if someone else will come in with the same or a new concept. Expanding on this for a second and viewing the performance of the station as less than stellar what would you - the reader - do with this facility from a programming standpoint if you could spin the wheel? Would you leave it as is or do something different?

What about Talk? Talk would be great on a big fm stick in Reno. Put Wild on 937 and Hot Talk 1029.

Would Citadel honestly sign on an FM talk to cut the throat of market leader KOH? I don't think so. Is Wild going to be around? Who knows, I know the whole moral is down at that station, and within the cluster as well. I don't think Wild would move down to 93.7 being that Scott still has the contract with Flynn. I agree an FM talk would be good for the market. I know Rob, Arnie, and Don are saying they are returning to Reno on a "bigger stick". 102.9 is among the strongest signals in the market. 95.5 as well. I still think KWYL will be gone before KNEV, any thoughts?

Well, the Buzz isn't exactly ripping them to shreds.
Edited by KJCB on 01/17/06 02:21 AM.

being a former "Wild" pioneer...I'm putting all my bias-ness aside.

Jockless radio does seem to be gaining steam in smaller markets. But with Reno growing as big as it is... mainly from the California crowd, an Urban/AC like Wild can only fail from it's own sucess. Having said that, KOH has the most say in what happens. They carry the station financialy (I know, KBUL is a bread winner too) but, any competition for them would be mearly a fly on the windshield anyway. Moving "Wild" on to a smaller tower is possible, but gone forever seems unlikely. They kill KWNZ in the ratings, (there nearest competitor), and KNEV will always be second fiddle to Alice. So they have the most to loose. I mean, they just got booted out of their own studios...

In any event, an FM talk in a "Red" market... needs a direction. Air America doesn't do very well against Rush & Hannity... so what is the format? Gen X & Y? I hear Bonne'vl is starting that movement... and Salt Lake and Reno have similar demo's, no?

RE: morale @ KWYL... any morale at a Citadel owned stationed can presumably be low... Cit.a.del - a stronghold or fortified place (in other words...cheap).

Now that's bias

I respect what you are saying, Wild isn't an Urban/AC, far from it. If anything they are Urban. There isn't enough African American % to have a station like this. Yes they are killing KWNZ in ratings 12+, have you seen 18-34? there is a difference, but money talks. All you hear on Wild is National Regional spots, not local direct. Wild has went up significantly, they now have the music exclusivity, where else could they have went but up? Since Patty has left they sound sloppy (what else do you expect if a 18 year old mixer is running the station). My bet is 102.9 will be the new home for Rob, Arnie, and Don. I miss that show! Can't wait! BTW.. Matt Million got let go yesterday from the KWYL morning show, a month ago they let the Midday girl go, what's next? hmmmmmmm

No.

In addition, all the better quality syndication is already taken by the other, weaker talk stations...

To the "Wild Pioneer" above, you guys did excellent work - but Reno is a very white-bred market and it has been proven that rhythmic is a difficult sell to the local market, no matter what the numbers say. KWNZ (before and after the switch to CHR/POP) has kicked KWYL for over a year in local direct billing, which is always a reliable barometer on the success of any local radio station. Arbitron is only half the story...local support is the rest of it.

To expand on the CCMAYS point...From many different accounts coming over time from the KWYL staff, Sandy "No N----r Music" Gamblin (I worked under him in '97-'98 at KWNZ - and the "N" word is the euphemism he used to refer to rhythmic music) has been beating on the KWYL staff to not sound "Urban" on the air pretty much ever since he got back to Reno. Between that and lack of local support (billing and community-wise), it would be Sandy's dream to be successful in making Wild go away.

Does Reno need another Rock station? The only way to effectively market Rob, Arnie and Dawn is to have them on a rock station. Citadel-Reno, with the exception of KKOH (which takes on more 35+ adults than anything else), has no stations going after males - especially 18-49 or 25-54...that is a crowded market, though...
