93.7 The Fan + Post-Gazette - Just Married!

That marriage is sort of like a unrecovered compulsive gambler hooking-up with a girl
whose credit score is 162....

I have to give a big thumbs up to 93.7 The Fan. Its live and local, and is outstanding in my opinion. This new deal with the PPG, helps the paper more than he helps the station, but its still good for both.

Well, it gives The Fan a lot more reporter resources, which will be especially important if it wishes to be "live and local" at a lot of high school football games come fall.

Here it is only Spring and we are talking Fall.
I hope all this does come around by the time Fall gets here.
I can hear the first game of the season on 93.7 THE FAN/PPG.
Here is a suggestion for that game.
Avella vs. Geibel Catholic.
They have the longest span of games lost. It always comes down to these two meeting, to decide who will pick up that "1st W'' of the season.

The Ticket and the Dallas Morning News formed the same type of partnership last year. I didn't notice many changes. The same DMN guys that appeared regularly on the Ticket before (JJT, Goose, Todd Archer) continued to do so and not many else other than maybe Mike Heika, but that may have been more a function of KTCK becoming the Stars flagship.

So how does everyone feel about the Fan at this point? I think Seibel and Starkey are a winner, but NY Vinnie is just a brutally tough listen. Plus his show is too long, 10-2 basically means he's on all day if you're in the car like I am. (Personally I'm still listening to Cowherd on satellite).

The morning show is about what I expected it to be, OK at best.

Kalena Bell's a disaster, but I told a friend of mine recently that Erin Andrews was this bad in her first gig as the Tampa Bay Lightning sideline reporter, and she worked out OK.

I like the little bit of Greg Gianotti that I've heard, haven't heard the late-night guy.

Also still think they TOO local at times, forcing it when "Topic A" is a national story like Tiger. And every time I wanted to hear what they were saying about Ben early last week they were trying to get off the topic and talk about the Pens.

We'll see some numbers soon....

Because of my work schedule, I have not listened to the morning show, but frankly, I was never a fan of Burton, Colony or Alexander at their prior jobs so I don't feel as if I am missing anything. I am not impressed with Ron Cook and Vinnie. I agree that Vinnie is WAY too "New York" for my taste. Fortunately Stan and Guy are now on from 10 until 2 so that solves that. I agree that Seibel and Starkey are clearly the best part of the lineup. Respected, knowledgeable regarding sports and they have seemed to develop a nice rapport. I haven't heard much of the evening lineup but I had never heard of these guys before so again I don't feel as if I am missing anything. I drive home during the overnight shift and lets just say that I have not been impressed with anyone they have put in that overnight chair. Chris Muller(sp) has some potential and he is put in a bad position by having to fill alot of time by talking seemingly to himself because of the lack of calls due to the hours he is on the air. Matt Polinsky (sp) has a great radio voice and could warrant more time and/or a better shift but it is too early to tell. No one else overnight is worth mentioning. Finally, is it just me or does Kalena Bell seem to be improving? I have to give credit where credit is due. She is not polished yet, but her delivery does seem to be getting better. All in all the station is a mixed bag of good and bad at this point which is what can be expected I suppose.

I know I am an old dope, but so far my thougts on 93.7 "the Fan" are ...."Stan, Guy...STILL LOVE THE SHOW".. (SAME thing for Mike and Mike)

True, Boss.

Doing my best James Hampton-

I mean, most wannabe sportscasters who grow up around here are never going to get the chance she has. To them, she has it all.

Now, she could have come in to town and robbed banks, peddled dope, or stole her grandmother's pension checks and none of them would have minded.

But misprounounce "Tekulve" on a sportscast? Miss Bell, that's Un-Pittsburgh!!!!!

For effect, I could let that joke go without a reply.

But I want to make an additional comment.

I have read some incredibly meanspirited things on the 'net directed to Miss Bell (which, sadly, I may have joined with the above post). I realize that it's the business, but I'm uncomfortable with it.

Here is a young lady who has traveled across the country to make Pittsburgh her new home. We should be embracing this woman!

Yet here is she is, far away from home, learning things that are unfamiliar to her, and then some joker has to go out of his way to create this-

http://twitter.com/FakeKalenaBell

Yes, it did bother me when I heard her butcher Kent Tekulve's name. I believe nothing is certain but death, taxes, and the 1979 Pittsburgh Pirates are sacred!

But it would bother me more if she was sent packing.

It would bother me more that she would remember Pittsburgh as the place that ridiculed her when she tried.

It would bother me that a young career would be sabatoged.

She is new to working in a large market and it is only natural that she is going to make mistakes.
And like anyone new to the market she is going to botch the pronounciation of North Versailles,
Monongahela, DuBois, etc. (stations here have never done a very good job prepping new hires on
such things in my view)

Also, if you go to their website you will see she is quite attractive. And attractive women working
in radio unfortunately draw their share of unwelcome attention from idiots.

I have not heard anything worse from her than this morning's bottom of the hour break on 104.7,
where a male announcer from Cleveland stated that the Pens were "up on Ottawa 2 games to 1
going into Game 3 of their series (???!!)", followed by a traffic report from the "Fox Sports 970
Traffic Center".

Just laughing because I remember watching all 7 games of the '79 World Series with my family,
and my mom kept calling him "TEK ull love" every time he took the mound! I'm sure Teke is used
to it by now.

I was at a twi-night doubleheader years ago on a Friday night and the second game went 17 innings. Late in the second game a rather well-oiled fan was screaming "You stink Tekulve" over and over. Finally someone pointed out to him that Don Robinson was pitching... at which point people started piling on as to how you could confuse those two... (for those who might not know, Robinson was about 6'4" 260 and threw overhand, Tekulve weighed at least 100 pounds less and threw underhand...).

Then on the way out in the 14th inning or so of the second game, as always the guy was outside with the morning paper and someone asked him if the score was in there (did you ever leave a Pirate game and NOT hear that?). He said, "Yeah, Berra made two errors in the 17th and they lost..."

Ahh, the good old days....

It goes beyond misprouncing a tricky name. She was botching basic sports terms. She said, "Sidney Crosby made two goals to lead the Penguins" and she said someone on the Pirates "gave up two errors." She also said that one of the pitchers "earned five runs."

Those are fundamental mistakes which suggest the reader knows little about sports, and that's deadly on a station that caters to hardcore sports fans.

They've now put Jeff Hathhorn in charge of tutoring her, which means that in addition to pulling a full-time shift that includes five updates per hour in PM drive between AM and FM, he has the responsibility of making sure she's on the right track.

I have nothing against hiring someone fresh out of school or a female or someone who's from out of town. Just get someone who's qualified to handle the job.

Then you missed the Kelena Bell classic during the NCAA tournament when she said that Northern Iowa beat off Kansas. The best part was that it was in the can and just ran all night long, not a live read that was just messed up once. That is probably my biggest problem, that when someone have a chance to check their work before submitting it to air consistently and they don't, the blame falls squarely on their shoulders. After trying to sit through those sportscasts I have all but given up and just opt for Tony Bruno now before I go to bed.
