93.7 WSTW airing George Thorogood

Talk about out of format. Really surprised to hear Bad to the Bone between current top 40. Thought my radio was messing up! Turns out just a part of the all request lunch show, but still surprised they'd go that far out of format in the request show.

I know it's market #81 but still... I'm still surprised that any commercial station would play any request that isn't currently on their regular playlist or is pre-approved by the boss. I recall decades ago, talking on the phone to a friend (former jock) who was at work and s/he* asked me if I'd record a phone bit and pretend to be requesting the song that was coming up on the obviously pre-programmed "all request" show. It's all smoke & mirrors!!!

*Not sure why but even after all these years, I feel like I need to protect the identity of that person and the station!

I worked for a country station in NW PA and was allowed to take requests anytime and play them anytime. the rule was, as long as we had it in the computer and hadn't played that song in 6-8 hours and that artist in 2 hours, we could play it. Didn't have to be in the playlist. (and we played a lot of stuff.. even some everly brothers and elvis!)

I currently work for an AC station in the Midwest and we have a few simple rules and placement requirements for request, but we can play them

How many musical artists can Delaware call their own? I would think that alone would be reason enough to play George Thorogood & The Delaware Destroyers, even if it is kind of out of format for WSTW.

Have you ever listened to Pierre? He’ll play the Chairman of the Board every once and awhile. Talk about someone who breaks the format, Frank Sinatra on a rock station. I love it. It’s nice to hear him play the old WMMR jingles from before they were a rock station too when he’s playing Sinatra.

Pierre is someone I consider a "DJ's DJ" (or a "radio geek's DJ"). Some of these little winks he does shouldn't work on-air but somehow they do! Maybe the last of his kind.

Pierre can do whatever he damn well pleases. His boss I doubt has the guts to reprimand Pierre, since he's the king of Philly rock radio. And the listeners of WMMR are a bit more musically inclined and much, MUCH, more willing to genre hop and follow Pierre on his train of thought. And the few who might not care for it too much know their usual fare will be back on soon. Definitely not the norm for radio, which is a bit of a shame, but everyone knows how milk toast radio is now.
