93.9 MIA and Format Tweaks

Have any of you noticed that WMIA has tweaked its format? Not to be too repetitive of my earlier post, but these tweaks have come in the past two months. It seems that MIA has moved from a Dance format to more of an AC-type format. While there are still a lot of Dance songs played, there seems to be more pop and AC recurrents. For example, yesterday I heard Michael Buble. In addition, MIA has also been touting its "variety." Anyone agree? Anyone with any ideas on reasons for moving in the AC direction?

Yes Scott, I've noticed. I've also wrote the PD about it as to why the are just mirroring the Coast. Says that "upper management" tests the songs and comes back negative for Miami. Why is it that SW Florida's Z100 plays a much much better variety of the same format (or what was the same format prior to 2 months ago)? I've listened to Z100 (100.1 Ft. Myers/Naples)..."Move to the Music" and the playlist is heck of a lot better than MIA. I previously left my opinion on the board about MIA and how disappointing they sound now. They are definitely NO KTU. (the direction they were originally going 3 years ago)

106.1 in philly did this and they are getting crappy ratings

but i know what will fix that we will talk more about that in october lol

Interesting how they dumped the mirroring of KTU. With Michelle and Goumba Johnny and a market ripe for dance music, the station rather play alongside the Coast and even Lite. So now Miami has 3 AC stations and no dance, rock or alternative.

It seems that the station was not given enough time to succeed. To be successful, WMIA should have tried to bring back some of what made Power 96 so great during its heyday. For example, WMIA could have broadened its playlist. It could have added mix shows, perhaps even bringing back some of Power's classic mix shows.

With Easy now on the scene, and with Lite probably softening a bit to take on Easy, perhaps Clear Channel saw an opening for a Hot AC. Coast's fetish for 80s music leaves them as more of a niche format, perhaps, and thus maybe CC sees WMIA as filling some sort of Hot AC void.

I admit I have only listened off and on to WMIA over the past year or since whenever it started until now.

Anyway, do / did they ever have ANY live jox on there who were actually in Miami? I know they were using some NYC voicetracked talent on some shifts.

Perhaps if they had actual, live, local jox on it would bring back some of the excitement and relevance to local radio once again.

ScottBurns I agree with you. I am surprised as well that they didn't try to mimic the classic Power sound with mixes and such. As I believe the PD is Chief Raymond Hernandez isn't he an old Power guy or I could be mistaken. They've got Leo and Slammin Felix Sama so the ingredients are there.
