93.9

LA really needs a EDM station.

This board has been begging for an EDM station on 93.9 for over a decade.

I remember when KZLA 93.9 was flipping away from country, and posters (myself included) kept writing how it was time to bring back Groove Radio or KDL on 93.9.

The ironic part about that is the number of country artists who've lately collaborated with EDM artists: Maren Morris & Zedd, Kelsea Ballerini and The Chainsmokers, and most recently Kane Brown and Marshmello. That could be a new format. Country by day, EDM by night.

I think in the early going there may be 5 shares of listening available for the 96.3 & 93.9 formats, but not long term. KXOL by itself only pulls about a 3.
The total shares in 18-49 are likely to be in the 6 to 7 share range. KXOL is over a 4 there.

My guess is there will probably be more like 4 to 4.5 shares split between the two stations on a long-term basis.
The genre is growing in appeal rapidly. I see 6 shares or more in 12+ and 8 shares in 18-49 in the one to two year term.

Throwback hip-hop and R&B would've been capable of pulling stronger ratings than what Cali 93.9 is likely to generate. But let's face it - the reason Meruelo likely didn't go in that direction is because such a format on a powerful signal likely would've cannibalized sister station Power 106 to a degree.
Unlikely that those shares could be had. KDAY's core lives in its current coverage area. Adding a bigger signal would not be a bigger gain than the new format. And the new format is an unbelievably great combo with KDAY and Power.

One thing to note is that reggaeton/latin trap/latin rap on Cali 93.9 is "dance music" for young Latinos in the market.

Yep, the dance style for it all is called "perreo" and a search on YouTube will reveal examples.

Note: Miley Cyrus did not invent twerking.

How well is XM Channel 13 Pitbull doing? I really like this channel. I think it would do well in the LA area.

There is no audience data for any of the XM channels or, in fact, for the whole XM operation.

But does KXOL play “Old Town Road” and “Talk”? One has to wonder if “Fuego” will be a game changer if Entravision were to try this in Los Angeles.

This is a variant on the now 30-some year old reggaeton and Latin rhythmic format, with English songs tossed in. Many reggaeton core stations do included some English songs, such as ones where an artist like Maluma or J Balvin collaborates with a general market artist like the recent (and horrible stiff) song from Madonna.

This Sacto format is kinda' like most CHRs in Latin America, which play both English and Spanish language music.

Entravision does not have a signal that this would be competitive with in LA.

The main competitors would be Power, Kiss, Amp, Kali and Mega. All have superior signals.

I'm not Spanish but I like reggaeton, and the collaborations between Latin and English speaking artists. Not that I think I'm very representative of non-Spanish radio users but I find 93.9 a fun listen.

DavidEduardo, since you are the resident Spanish format expert, do you see the 93.9 model (or even the Fuego model) being adopted in many more markets nationally? Possibly New York or elsewhere?

93.9 is essentially the same or very similar playlist to KXOL. And KXOL is hardly unique, other than being the first successful station in the format in Los Angeles. There are lots of similar stations all over the country, beginning with WSKQ and WXNY in New York and WXDJ and WZTU and WRMA in Miami... and of course the originals, WVOZ-FM and WODA in San Juan. There are rhythmic CHRs all over in the big markets.

And there are rhythmic CHRs all over Latin America... hundreds of them..

Each market has a different flavor in the format. So playlists vary, but the concept is exactly the same.

and now Emmanuel Coquia is named as Director of Programming and Content at Meruelo Media. He will oversee Power 106, KDAY and Cali 93.9FM.

Meruelo Media ups Emmanuel "E-Man" Coquia to Director of Programming and Content for Meruelo Media. In this new post, E-Man will head the programming and music content for KPWR-FM (Power 106) and 93.5 KDAY. Additionally, he'll oversee the initial stages of the new Latin Rhythmic format on KLLI-FM (CALI 93.9). He took over as interim Program Director for Power 106 and KDAY on February 1.

E-man personally recruited Nick Cannon and together they created the new Power 106 morning show. He also overhauled the 93.5 KDAY Morning Show with Romeo and added Cece to the mix. Today, he is an instrumental player in the developmental stage and launch of the all-new "Cali 93.9."

Here is an update for 93.9FM

Meruelo Media Spanish Rhythmic “Cali 93.9” KLLI Los Angeles has debuted its new morning show featuring Carolina Marquez, Mando Fresko, and Jessica Flores.

Fresko moves across the hall from overnights at Rhythmic CHR “Power 106” KPWR where he has been since 2007 in multiple dayparts.

Marquez joins KLLI after previously working at predecessor Regional Mexican “Radio Centro 93.9” KXOS and hosting mornings at SBS’ “Latino 96.3” KXOL. She has also worked as a producer and host for LaTV and MTV Tr3s.
