937 The Fan in 2013

Does anybody know if any of the hosts renewed their contracts on 937 the fan? I know the 3 year contracts are up in a month or two.

Speaking of said station, will any of the new CBS Sports show such as Jim Rome be moved to 93.7? Lots of chatter on the Cleveland board regarding this.

I'd be absolutely stunned if the Fan here took any national shows during the daytime. Regardless of what we all think of the current product, the station is billing very well.

Rome gets ratings in Cleveland, always has. He matters in SoCal, Cleveland, Tampa and few other markets but he never moved the meter on 970, but then again neither has anything else. It's big news when 970 goes from a .4 to a .6....

If any CBS Sports Radio shows end up on 93.7, I'd imagine it would be overnights and weekends. For the most part, the CBSSR product is going to run 24/7 on stations owned by CBS and Cumulus. In Baltimore, CBS has a live-and-local FM sports outlet, and an AM that is currently ESPN; it will change to CBS when that network launches in January.

However, Rome was not on 540 yesterday, they were back to running the midday rebroadcast of the Fox Sports morning show. Have to see if that's permanent or just another bit of ineptitude by 540, which could not be doing a worse job with the Fox affiliation (although I still think that's on purpose). It could also signal that he's going to surface somewhere else. I guess there is one scenario where he could be on 93.7, that being a delayed broadcast. His show would sound good late nights. But again, CBS will have Scott Ferrall live10P-2A so we'll have to wait and see.

AM 540 is no more into what it puts out on its airwaves now than it was when it ran that "La Explosiva" format out of Michigan.

Technically, you could hope Mr. Ferrall remembers he used to be sports director at KQV-1410 and still has relatives in the Pittsburgh area, and that could lead to a promotion ala what AM 1020 does with Jim Bohannon (and still does even though KD-AM only runs two hours of Bohannon these days).

For the record, the Rome show was on 540 today, albeit with the Sklar Brothers as fill-in hosts.

According to Rome's website, he will continue to be carried on 540, ruling out any possibility of his show moving to the Fan. He will also continue on 1280 from New Castle, and added to 96.7 from Mercer, which is one of the Cumulus owned stations switching from ESPN to CBS.

If Rome is to remain on 540 long term, it will be outside of the normal Fox Sports Radio package, as FSR is going with a show hosted my Jay Mohr starting somewhere around Jan 2nd.

If anything the trend is in the other direction. I notice 970 is now Live and Local
from the end of Mike and Mike until early evening.

If you look at www.jimromestations.com you'll see that he retained a pretty high percentage of his previous affiliates. 550 WGR in Buffalo, 850 WKNR in Cleveland, 1260 in Erie, 920 in Fairmont, WV all continuing with the show (and WEIR in Weirton, which I thought was running an all-comedy format...).

He moved in markets like Tampa, where he will be on a CBS station running the network 24/7, and Orlando, where he will be on a Cumulus-owned FM from Melbourne and an independent startup on 810 in the immediate metro. Basically both are situations where CBS is taking his show away from Clear Channel stations. But his revenue would drop too far if his syndication went from the large number of affiliates he had to the 70 or so that the CBS/ Cumulus partnership will provide. It's always about the money.

For what it's worth, WEIR looks like sports to me, at least per website ...

However, WBBD-1400, the old WKWK-AM (many moons ago), is running the Clear Channel comedy format, though interestingly enough Clear Channel's http://www.247comedy.com/main.html touts WBBD as an Ohio station, listing only a Huntingdon station as a West Virginia affiliate of that format.

I knew I heard the comedy format over there somewhere.....

1400 Wheeling went Oldies for what seemed like a quarter-of-an-hour this year. I tried through some
side channels to recommend that they go back to calling it 14WK, but the suggestion was not used (or
even heard, I suspect), and the format didn't last long. I don't think "comedy" will do any better. It's
probably another tower waiting to be dropped.

Still surprised 1400 Wheeling hasn't gone to a Sports format . People are still upset 1290/1340 dropped ESPN a few years back.

540 is Fox Sports, and apparently running at low power or with transmitter problems. 970 is ESPN but
very directional and doesn't make it to Wheeling.
