Dance music will not do it for pittsburgh. K-ROCK has everything that rocks not songs that suck like DVE and 1059thex.

TheX-Newer stuff not enough old what guns and roses wow.
DVE-90% of old stuff not enough new stuff and if they play new why not do this old, old, new, old, old, new etc.
937krock-Plays just right for me all mixed up with great music.

Maybe this guy works at clearchannel that want u to think that way. But he or she wishes it would happen maybe it was just a catch phrase.

Long live k-rock. :p

K Rock Fan,
That's personal preference on your part about the music not being good on DVE and dance music not working here in Pittsburgh. I for one enjoy dance music and enjoy listening to DVE. We don't know for a fact that dance music won't work in Pittsburgh, because it hasn't been tried since mix jamz 100.7 went off the air in 1993, which I believe did well in the early 1990's. I think the reason for the change was that a lot of people were into country when mix jamz flipped to K Bear, which I believe happened on January 1, 1993 (A Country Format). I believe a month after, 104.7 flipped to the country station The Rebel. Ken Hawk could let me know if I am right about that. I would give the dance format another try in the Burgh. In my opinion, I think it could succeed again. Hey if it doesn't work, they could always change again. The bottom line is that K Rock's ratings are not doing well at all, and this has been going on for a long time.

The first post is incorrect.

K Rock definitely has songs that suck. They definitely do not have everything that rocks.

But then again, no other station does either.

If just saying something makes it true, I'm going to start a thread entitled "Edward Norton wants to marry me" and see if it works.

Todd...to answer your question, K-Bore did come first...going on the air originally as "K-Garth" right after EZ took over and blew everyone out...and that happened on January 1st. I believe that was when the transaction took effect between Signature and EZ. Rebel flipped not quite a month later. I felt Mix Jamz was a good format, and there have been few like it than what I ever heard before or since. I believe EZ simply wanted to capitalize on the country craze and steal some of Y-108's audience share. Then Rebel goes on the air and then launches on-air torpedoes at B94, like we were trying to unseat them. We all joked that the GM must have been taking kickbacks from Tex Meyer for the way he was marketing the station.

I feel that the dance format could do well...as long as it was a rap-free format. There were lots of white R&B artists who weren't trying to be black like later on, and lots of black rappers that weren't 'gangsta'. It was a classy, well-produced format with mass appeal to 18-49 women, with a core of 25-40. We had discussed this on another board that B-94 could come back with an 80's based format and recapture some of its glory. It could do the same by adopting the old Mix Jamz format. Mix Jamz was only around for about 3 years, but B-94 was an institution for more than two decades with instant brand recognition and top-of-mind recall...even today. I don't think the Mix Jamz brand had that, but the music certainly did.

You know what i like what i like and you guys and ladies can listen to whatever you guys want. If k-rock changes wish i hope they don't but if they do i will listen to theX.

But i like k-rock just a little more. But i am deeply sorry for acting dumb. But i don't think a dance music station and talk station will do. Since 961kiss has one for hd. I just wish the kid chris show wasn't on why i would be listening to them right now. But i am listening to theX at 1059 which is a decent station. I just don't like DVE don't ask me why. But why is it theX is playing Guns N Roses on their station?

i can't agree with you more kenhawk...its the difference between wktu and hot97 in new york...and even more apparent when it was still hot103...slickest radio station in the world, circa 1989...

Mix Jamz was an example of how a small mom-and-pop operation like them could succeed. I think Dick Oppenheimer, who owned the station back then, only owned one other one, and that was it. Thus, there weren't these programming decisions made from the top and given the 'let's see if this will work' treatment. They were managed and programmed locally. Under Chris Wegmann's lead, that station was very profitable and was very solid. But when you're waved a bunch of cash in your face by EZ Communications, it's a little tough to say no. Coincidentally, when Chris was running WMXP and I was running WKPA (both of which are licensed to New Kensington), we both got blown out within about a month of each other...because of duopoly.

GREAT talent, also. Bill Knight, Bill Webster, DC Taylor, John Anthony, and many others.

And to Name a few more on Mix Jamz with great talent were Rich Hawkins, Jay Silvers, Karon Eden and Dan Simon. DJ Taylor was hilarious. I remember his nightly question of the day and guess what's down my pants. He was probably the local Pittsburgh shock jock back then.

Jay Silvers and Bill Webster were the only people who survived the carnage in the end. We hired Karen Eden to work at Rebel for a little while, but then she ended up quitting. DC Taylor went back home to Long Island after it was all over. Kim Donovan, last I heard, got out of radio entirely, got married and had a son. Most popular guess he got on "guess what's down my pants" was "your hand"...often suggested by his lesser 'fans'. I remember hearing that almost every night. He did a great job of spinning it, though.

I was never into Mix Jamz 100.7, but DC Taylor was absolutely hilarious, had kind of an infectious, almost artificial souding laugh. Anyone know what he's been up to these days?

We can't forget Scott St. John either!

And Bill Knight's livin' Dahn Sahth, doing VOs and enjoying the Voodoo Chili.

I'll have to give him a listen next time I'm back in that area. Thanks for the heads up. I thought Al Burke was doing mornings on Y102.

Long live KIDD CHRIS!
And long live watching his program single handedly kill 93.7 K Rock. His show is good in Philly, but it does not translate well into his other market and I hope he realizes that before running at the mouth about wanting to go to Cleveland because Cleveland will kill his show.
