93Q/WQIO stunting?

I checked out 93Q on the way into work this morning and heard a loop of Bobby McFerrin's "Don't Worry, Be Happy" playing ad nauseum. Some guy with a fake Carribean accent commented "don't worry, we're building you a *new* radio station! Be happy." :)

For what it's worth, the old 93Q website (www.wqiofm.com) doesn't show any change - no hints or teases of any new format, if indeed there is one (maybe it'll come out the other end of the stunt as a different flavor of Soft AC).

So unless there's a hidden meaning to "Don't Worry, Be Happy" that might suggest the new format, one guess is as good as another. Speculation?

One thing I did notice is that their signal sucks right now. I can barely get it in the car at all and I usually have no trouble. Did they lower their power to save on the electric bill or what?
______________

Here's the link to the Mt Vernon newspaper on the changes.
4 people let go, 2 going to mornings @ WYHT Y105, new format to start Monday at noon.

"Be happy" Monday at noon for 93Q - an update...

There's much more. And not everyone's happy.

CC didn't renew the contracts of WMVO/WQIO personalities Ron Staats, Jenney Murray, Michael Stone and Michael Hayes before handing the keys to BAS. When the turnover happened Saturday at midnight, all four found themselves out of jobs.

WMVO will stay with their pop standards format, albeit without Staats, who was at AM 1300 since January 1967. (!) But BAS officals told the Mount Vernon News that they want Staats to return.

As for 93Q, listen tomorrow at noon. That's all Jim Lorenzen is saying. Oh, and the "don't worry, be happy" comment was also made by Jim to local listeners. Hmmm.

Jeff Neidert, partial owner of WQIO/WMVO, was appointed as new full-time general manager for the combo. FWTW, he'll live in the area.

Pretty much all the info came from Friday's Mount Vernon News...

Sources told me that the four people let go were done so because BAS couldn't afford their pay. Of course they wont need as many people either because they are trying to take their focus to Community issues only...

They are keeping WWBK/WBZW's Eric Lee as Production Director, Imaging Director.
Plus Larry will stay around for a little while.
I think Bevington is going to stay too.

I was told that BAS wants to go a progressive AC format (watered down HOT AC) like Mix 94.1 Canton... They did recieve a Bob and Sheri radio demo about a month ago, hmmmmm.

So I could see Bob and Sheri Mornings, Larry holding down afternoons, John Tesh at night and maybe Eric in afternoons? However they might have Cher voicetrack afternoons on-top of her sales gig...

All of this may not happen. It may of just been a rumor spread around CC Mt Vernon. I guess we will all find out tomorrow at 12 noon...
Best wishes to all at B.A.S. Mount Vernon.

Could very well be that they are on a back-up transmitter for now while doing maintenance on the main transmitter.

Why not? When would you have a better time to do it? And do you really think that CC would change the final tube just before they sold the station?

I'd be interested as to what kind of backup transmitter they have in Mount Vernon. It would have to be an antique.
______________
