94.1 How's this sound?

Since apparently they're reading my posts about Country Legends over on Union (or at least I'm taking credit for it)....

Here's an idea. Input?

Say you’re 94.1 You were thinking about country, but now WMC is going to do it. Assuming you don’t want to split the pie three ways.....

Classic Hits Z94. The Cat left a hole. Fill it. Don't even have to change the calls.

You play selected late 60s, just about everything that charted above 30 in the 70s, and pre-MTV 80s. You position the station simply. “The best music ever made”, or “Part of your life”, etc… You make a real effort to NOT sound too mellow. (My only beef with XM 70s)

You do NOT seque, ever. You do not go into spots without a jock. Jingles return sparingly. The jocks are up, friendly, and never talk over silence.

Here’s the lineup:

AM: Rick Dees voice tracks (assuming he would do it) with a local news / traffic anchor. Bit oriented stuff. Kraddick MIGHT work but I’d rather have Rick.

Midday: Nikki. Younger then most of the music but pro enough to pull it off.

PM: Argo. Ditto above. I might have them change thier air names.

Nights: Rick Earwood. Some music trivia and ‘where are they now’ bits. SHORT bits. When you’re done shut up and play the music.

Rob Grayson would also fit in here anywhere.

Overnights can be jockless or tracked, but should mainly just roll the tunes.

Saturday nights; Tom Kent’s live coast to coast show (he’s a Memphis alum from WAY back)

Sundays. Bring back Solid Gold Sundays with a knowledgeable jock. For that day only go for 60s and very early 70s.

It probably wouldn’t bee much more expensive than the current format, and the Cat had what, a 3 or 4? It would pick up the younger thinking adult audience who think WRVRs just a touch too laid back.

Hmmmmm?

I like it. I'd listen to it. But I think I see (here we go again) a Jack in their future, and unfortunately it's not the Wolfman.

It's Entercom. They won't pay for Jack. They'll make it "Charlie," like Portland and Madison.

Somehow, I think that WMBZ has waited too long to make any decision, and has their options limited. The problem with a Classic Hits station is that we now have two classic rockers, and either one of them could easily swing more "hit based" and neutralize 94.1. "Charlie" would have some appeal, but the position and "oh wow" factor that is sorely needed for a launch has been diminished by FM 100's Whatever stuff. It's a tough place to be. Based on recent history, Entercom seems to be embracing battles against Country Leaders, and I still don't think that Classic Country on AM is going to stop them. 94.1 The Wolf...has a nice ring to it.

I disagree. It would be too dangerous for them. My Z would play some older funk hits as well, and they couldn't touch that (at least 103 couldn't). Plus there are 100s of tunes neither of the rockers could touch as well. Think Abba, or Bread, or most of the one-hit wonders.

Abba? Bread? Too AC. Waaay too close to WRVR's older end. They need to continue to be younger based. "Charlie" or "Fred" or anything else would also be too close to WRVR as far as the target demo, and in-house competition. They really only have 1 option, and it's howling in the night...

No, "Mike" like they have in Boston. Besides, there's an "M" in their calls.
______________

Yes I totally agree. I simply can not understand how after nearly 5 years this fact has been lost on Entercom brass. It's just plain as day to me. But, then again, who am I but a lowly jock-- albeit an internet-only jock these days (oh, forgot about that Austrailian station I now image hahaha).
______________

I think I love you 'Saur!

OMG! That would RULE! The young pups on this board don't understand how stuff like this hits home for some of us! Damn..."I Wanna Make it With You", rolling into "Fernando", followed up by "Games People Play" - Joe South....MANNNNNNN,and I would hire everyone who never slammed me on this board. ;) - wink

Sorry for not including you. You could work with Dees in the morning :)

I get sick of reading this crap about the WOLF, what a sorry idea, more than one classic country in a market just doesn't make sense to me.

The thing that is way wrong about the classic hits is that it stops way to early. The focus needs to be on not just 70s, but also 80s, this way you get a younger demo and further yourself from the competition by not sounding to much like another station. Broadining the playlist is key here, there are tons of great cuts form the 70s and 80s and many of them just don't get radio play today. Instead of just focusing on the generic playlist of today's Classic rockers and older stuff on Hot AC, pull out all the stops and throw it all in there, get a good image/marketing campagin going, hype it (but don't fully revel what is being cooked up) you get the "Oh wow" factor and when the switch is flipped you have a great start.

My personal idea would be to take the station in a 'retro' direction. Start with the 80s and go back through the mid seventies, include all the rock/pop/disco staples, but don't fudge on the other stuff from those genres, (IE: don't severly limit the playlist like Buzz does now with all 80 weekends or FM's whatever weekends). Bring back some the great jingle packages that where used back when, jocks who rock and image that makes it appear larger than life. I think this will give the listners the excitement and edge radio had when this stations playlist dominated CHR.

Apparently some folks at Kix106 think this is an option as well...seeing how their program director Lance Tidwell registered the domain name 941thewolf.com

Interesting...
