94.1 KRDE

Rich, are there any differences in power/antenna height for KRDE 94.1 versus its old 97.3(?) frequency? The Bradshaws pretty much block the signal just east of 51st Av and Olive (Dunlap) in Glendale, but I at least got a trace on the old freq. I've never received it in this area on 94.1, although the signal seems about identical elsewhere in the valley.
I'm curious about that, and whether a signal upgrade is planned.

Multiplex

The power is identical but the antenna is a new custom tuned ERI 2 bay half wave at the exact same height and tower position. Last fall I drove in from Wickenburg and heard te station most of the way in from Sun City West -- but I did discover a strong cable TV leakage problem in and near Sun City. The signal is shadowed by Camelback in the far northwest part of town. You might look at our WEB site and see the very detailed Received Signal Analysis map. I have had several call from people who hear us in Black Canyon City as well. My guess is the CATV leakage is hurting us but the FCC has no serious interest in fixing unlicensed signal interference.

I can pick up KRDE on my car radio clearly as far west as Luke AFB..but not on a tabletop radio (digital or dial)

Looking at FCC citations over the past several years, I've seen
quite a few related to CATV leakage...

I'd give a call to San Diego...

IIRC, the 400mHz protection for KOOL prevents them from moving in any closer, although now that KSWG is operating on their 96.3 CP, could the 94.1 Class A in Wickenburg be applied for come next filing window the create a valley-wide network.

My experience is that KRDE comes in in the car west on I-10 to about Tonopah with a little spottiness here and there, and north to about Glendale.

Hi guys Thanks for the reports. Yes there is a possible upgrade. Can't move closer the Phoenix because we are close as practical to KOOL (2nd adjacent - 400 khz)and we don't want to give up the 8000 ft mountain top site. Right now we are concentrating on the somewhat underserved central Pinal county area and of course southern Gila county. We now have a pretty good signal into the northern part of Tucson as well. Did anyone note we turned off the stereo pilot during the NAU games. That should have helped the fringe areas. Any and all comments welcome here or e-mail, or the phone 877-700-9410
PS Kathy Collins hears us OK at home in north Phoenix with a C.Crane radio.

Would said improvements cause much of an improvement in weak areas in the Northwest Valley and north central Phoenix? Or perhaps we could expect an improved contour similar to that of KQMR, also licensed to Globe?

The next step for KRDE would be C1 (which would give it the signal equivalent of KCDX). They may be able to do that, but it wouldn't be much of an improvement. KCDX is fuzzy on the NW side (multipath from both Camelback Mountain and Shaw Butte), and KRDE is impossible to tune in (funny, because I used to receive KRXS on 97.3 faintly when they were still a C3).

The improvements will make a big difference in N.W. Phoenix. We are some 1200 ft higher than 100.3 but running only a small fraction of the power right now. In this case the height is more important than power due to the mountain peaks between us and Phoenix. Still, a major project for our team.

Eric Again the higher elevation we have does help (300 ft higher than KCDX) which runs 4 times the power we do now ( 6 dB). Most places in Phoenix we match their signal. However the deep multipath and reflections from the mountains causes frequency selective nulls which is what you are probably sitting in. Bet you move a few hundred feet and get us OK. Sure would be nice to find a west- side translator to fill in the holes.

Could you file for a Class A on KSWG's old 94.1/Wickenburg frequency and battle it out with everyone else?
