94.1 Spartanburg translator relaying WHZT

W231BA 94.1 licensed to Spartanburg is now translating WHZT ("Hot 98.1), and it appears they have completed their move to the WOLT tower with 250 watts. Previously, the translator was only audible in the Lyman and Duncan areas, but now can be heard in Spartanburg proper. We'll have to see if this is permanent or if it is being prepared for a local AM station seeking an FM translator (like many other former WLFJ/WHRZ translators).

Sure it's not WJMZ 107.3 they are repeating?

The FCC record is wrong on this one, unless WJMZ carries WHZT on their HD-2. Does anyone have an HD radio to check? Not inconceivable since they have carried WLFJ-HD2.

It is VERY common for the FCC records to be wrong on the primary stations carried by translators. There is no requirement for advance approval, only notification, and I haven't been able to find those notifications in CDBS.

97.1 Sparanburg relaying WSPG ESPN 1400.

More translator fun in Spartanburg. 97.1 is on now with WSPG 1400. Since they are mono and 250 watts, it should get out pretty well.

It's a shame that WASC 1530 can't get its hands on one. The music would sound better on FM and they would be able to go 24 hours.

WOW!!! Now that is a station I had totally forgot about... Not to change the subject that much, but what is WASC doing now a days... I remember going to the Deaf and Blind schoo in Spartanburg and back in the 70's and 80's and since there was no Urban formatted station WASC was very popular until Power 98 and Kiss 102 came on the scene... CC

WASC is still a daytimer and is running Citadel's Urban AC format ("Touch" back in the ABC days) along with Doug Banks' afternoon show. They run some college sports on the weekend and religion on Sunday. I have heard some local programming from time to time, but not sure of the schedule as I work during the day (950 is the only AM station that makes it inside my office).

While it's probably the best format for the signal, it has to be tough with WJMZ 107.3 and WBAV 101.9 running similar formats on FM. A 24 hour FM signal might give them a chance to attract more listeners, increase revenue, and do more local programming.

Thanks for the update Neil... Back in the day they were automated using some sort of Reel to Reel service, but I am not sure what it was... I just remember up until around 89 they had some of the worst audio I had ever heard come from an AM radio station... Maybe they could pull off an FM translator which for Spartanburg would be a great addition for The Sparkle City... CC1
