94.1

Just noticed something. Is 94.1 shying away from "The Buzz"? I hear them just saying the frequency without the slogan a LOT nowadays. Also, have they gotten more downtempo? Even the 80's Weekend plays a ton of WRVR-like gold. It's very "un-Buzz" like, to me. Rather boring actually. 100 was starting to bum me out by sounding a little too-AC, but now 94.1 is even softer than they are. My wife was enjoying it for a while, but now even she's gone back to FM100.

Funny, I was thinking they sounded pretty up this weekend. As I have posted before, I don't think the "Buzz" moniker doesn't fit thier target demo. If they are losing it, I think it's a good move.

I agree that 100 is softening up a bit. Wouldn't mind a Rick Derringer or Van Halen whatever tune. Maybe they're not allowed to play any tunes older than the jock on the air...Rob, when are you on???

Saturday afternoon the Buzz played Phil Collins "In the Air Tonight" and the jock said, "That was P H Collins." I felt really old realizing there is someone on-the-air too young to know who Phil Collins is.

But later I had to turn off the Buzz 80s weekend when they played Dolly Parton's "9 to 5." That's just wrong! LOL ;)

I've noticed that some of their billboards have come down. the one on Madison has changed to WLMT, and the one in front of Clear Channel television (on the flip side of a 98.1/D&Z) is gone too.

Is the contract up?

I wouldn't think they are planning on country again. Kix is too big, and it didn't really work before. 9 to 5 was a big pop hit in 80 as well, so it may be possible that a station actually has some diversity... maybe!

Yeah, they and everybody else, should keep on working for that HUGE market share that's left in the Memphis market after ethnic/urban and Kix.
I mean, in a market that's better than 50% urban, let Kix run alone with country while everybody else tries to get that big share of Top 40, Classic Rock, Adult Contemporary, Alternative, Adult Alternative, Classic Adult Contemporary,..blah, blah, blah.
(Please note sarcasm)

If a station with a good signal-(94.1 still iffy after all these years, right?)-Would put a quality country station on, they'd get a nice share of the listener block Kix has.
I remain amazed that out of all the geniuses in programming in all the huge companies represented in Memphis, none of them can see the simple business sense that makes.

You have just a few stations trying to capture the huge urban audience in Memphis, ONE trying to capture the country listeners, and 45 fighting over the scraps that are left.

Country is not my favorite listening format, but personal preference should not matter. BUSINESS matters.

(And...end rant now.)

Hey- If that were the case, I could go all the way back to Jailhouse Rock (#1 the week I was born...)

I think maybe country could work. That does make sense only one country station, having 2 would have to create ore diversity. Good point

You and I have been saying that for the last 5 years. They read, I'm sure, but they aren't listening. CP may have been wierd, but he knew what we know. Now all we need is Matt to chime in...<P ID="signature">______________

Thanks on the good point. Like I said, they'd get a lot of agency revenue simply by default. And I think the country format could be pulled off better than Kix is doing it. They are complacent with no competition. It would have to be a signal that covers the whole market whereas "Froggy" was only strong to the south signal-wise. In head-to-head competition where Froggy's signal was strong, (Miss.) Kix many times got kicked!
There were places (office bulding, etc.) where you couldn't even pick up Froggy.
Although I'd no longer be able to afford to be involved, I'd love to see that battle!
