94.3 Columbia switching?

By looking at the Cumulus homepage for stations they seem to control a country station just in about every market expect a few. Here in SC the two country stations they own don't do to well, and those two being Wheelz 100.5 in Florence and Coyote 106.5 Myrtle Beach. Both get beaten by the Quantum owned country leaders. Eagle 92.9 and Gator 107.9. With that said Cumulus does control a high rated country station in Wilmington, NC WWQQ. Not sure how well it sounds but that is the only country station in the Wilmington, NC market.

I have listen to 106.5 and there not a bad country station at all, has for 100.5 I have heard them twice since they moved from 92.5 to 100.5. Their format was very good when they were on 92.5 with the exception of near the end when they played mostly modern country with almost no traditional country sound mixed in which gave it a boring sound some times. With out a dought the down grade in power and frequency change really put more than just a hurting on them. In some cases a power change will not really effect a stations listener ship just sales hype, big promo's, hey look at us, ect... and in others it might make all the difference in the world like when you down grade and loose 3/4th of your coverage area and over half your listeners.

At the same time, they still cover the metro quite well. Who cares that Eagle covers half the hemisphere? While it's great to put in a sales packet, and sounds impressive, the reality is you gotta win on the home turf. If you want to really break it down, the frequency change hurt far more than the power drain; at the same time Eagle seriously upgraded their on-air product both musically and talent-wise, and got competitive for real for the first time. That combination gave Eagle a leg up - made it more of a battle. Then, Phase 2 of the battle, while Eagle kept their staff more or less intact for years, WHLZ went to the bird for overnights and nights, VT'd middays, cut the morning show to one person and linered the afternoon show. It's almost like once they didn't have their foot on eagle's neck anymore thy just gave up.

With all the speculation, I still can't see Cumulus changing anything at Columbia's Citadel stations unless they feel they can make more money. And the Citadel stations seem to be in pretty good financial shape.

The River 94.3 had a chance to be different with their classic hits format. But they just ended up playing the exact lame so-called classic rock that Fox102.3 plays. It was unlistenable. It was better when they were getting programming from Denver during the Flashback era.

I just wonder what the rodeo clown Tim Miller will think of next.

(Yeah, he really has been a rodeo clown before.)

I guess it will be interesting to see if this actually happens and if they will be having almost no announcers like they have been doing. I really liked the Flashback formula, but what they ahve been doing lately really stinks and I think we can thank Tim Miller for that. 92.1 has become really boring too and Tim is one of the most boring announcers I have ever listened to. One of the best things that ever happened in Columbia radio was when he left WOMG and then Woody came in after that and made that station much better to listen to in the mornings.

Hey Lhsh you sound jealous or it's personal.

Not jealous and this is nothing personal, I have lived in Columbia most of my life and have listened to just about every radio station that has graced the dial here and trust me when I tell you Tim may be a nice guy, but he is boring as hell to listen to and would be better off off of the air. WACH did us a favor in the morning when they got rid of him, JMO.

I'm with you Hoffas Back. Miller put Oldies 103 on the map I did part time there. It was Miller, Ken Martin, Hunter Herring and Byrdman. Plus the engineer of WACH who is a friend of mine said when Tim Miller and Mike Woolfolk left the phones went nuts for weeks. Yet you still listen to him come on Lhsh you're being a joke.

BigGus, it was Brent Johnson that put 103 on the map as an Oldies station. He was PD from the beginning in April/May 1989.

And when he started, WOMG simulcasted on 1320 AM. WOMG is a good station. It has evolved a lot, along with WTCB. Very few stations spend over 20 years in the same format, but Columbia is lucky with so many of those: The Big DM, WCOS-FM, WTCB, WOMG, WNOK, WVOC, and WMFX.

Those few stations have power over the ones like 94.3 and 92.1 who are not as well-known and don't have good signals like those seven.

No sir. Not the growth era. Bloomington Broadcasting bought WOMG FM/AM from Price Broadcasting. One year after that purchase they hired Tim Miller from Houston. WOMG (Ken Martin middays) had the third highest 35-54 cume of any oldies station in the country. Brent may have been the PD at some point in its 20 year history but it was Miller who made the difference

943 WWNQ Are they stunting? I think s...

I think so. The artist separation is so bad, so it made me think and it should make you think…. Are they stunting? ??? If you go to WWW.943theriver.com it will tell you that “All-NEW Q94.3 Coming Soon. I call “B.S.” Most all home pages for websites look like this http://www.943theriver.com/main.html As you will see their web guy is building their New Web Page “Country Legends 94.3” in the background. Good Luck with that one 943/Marty Hall. Weak Stunt! :'(

I guess 943 will go back to eating WCOS’s scraps. “Hey 943, Enjoy your 1.3 – 2.1 Share” Cuz that’s all you will ever get! Ha Ha! ;D

Re: 943 WWNQ Are they stunting? I think s...

OnairPdMd, you are spot on with your eagle eye. I guarantee you that it will be a failure just like everything Tim Miller/Double O has done in Columbia. It's saying "Country Legends" but we all know that Carrie Underwood is not a "legend" but a current country star. So that means My Country 94.3 is coming soon.

Re: 943 WWNQ Are they stunting? I think s...

....really legends are Hank Jr. and Conway....look forward to scraps from WCOS...

Re: 943 WWNQ Are they stunting? I think s...

Only problem is WCOS is now using the slogan "MY COUNTRY". Where is that gonna stand. Legality issues and such. Who's gonna own it and you know that's gonna confuse the listener with arbitron. This should be fun. : )

Yeah. Double O probably already has all the country music loaded onto their drives, and if they do classic country, they already had that format. Top 40 music is a lot harder to get. They had two country stations and Tim knows how to do country.
