94.3 ditches "Island" moniker

Seems that 94.3 is no longer identifying itself as "Island 94.3," but rather just by its call letters alone, WMJC. Their on-air references to the station website are now directing people to www.wmjc.com instead of www.island94.3.com (though the Island logo still appears on the site).

The slogan was also tweaked, from "The Best of the 80s, 90s and today," to "The Best of the 80s, 90s and Now." The RDS also reads WMJC, but it has for well over a year after initially reading "Islnd943".

Not sure what the point of all this is...the station's music and lineup seems to have remained as is. Could this be the prelude to some sort of format change or the station being sold?

This is a copy of my comments on the NYRMB regarding the change. Apologies to those who already read it there. Some of the history was for the benefit of those from NYC and elsewhere who couldn't possibly have heard the station.

IIRC WMJC followed WCTO and was called Magic 94.3 (Hence the MJC). The station is consistently ranked in the bottom 10 for market 18, and rarely does better than a 1.0 in the 12+ demo despite tweaks and format adjustments over the years (including an attempt at Country.) Part of this is about the limited signal but certainly not all of it. My understanding is that despite its poor performance, the station bills well.

To me, its sad that they are focusing on the call letters and tag lines, and not the music. Maybe those changes are will follow the minor image change. By the way, the first thing you see when you go to the website is still an Island 94.3 banner.

there is nothing going on here!
I know people and the RDS was switched a long time a go. LI radio is revamping all of their websites..thats it.
