I think I would have gone with a 60's-70's Soul Gold for this station, which is something we
don't have now.........that they could actually create an audience for.
Agreed. Only V, Hot and Wild (to an extent) have been the permanent stations to date for the hip-hop R&B mixture ever since Cox axed Jamz and the Beat awhile back. Majic/Grown Folks and Kiss had to upgrade their urban AC formats from R&B oldies to 80s-present R&B, which seems way too contemporary sounding. The problem with Kiss is it could've still been a full fledged urban AC had it not been for Cox fragmenting it to WFOX and WBTS in the 2000s, plus WALR ran all the oldies straight in the ground till it wasn't enjoyable no more. But we can hold out hope another LP translator can pipe in a 60s-80s R&B oldies station for one soon.

The current format on both KISS and MAJIC (R&B from the late 80s, 90s and Now) seems to be working in there favors. WILD has morphed into a Pop station everyone has been wanting with very little Hip-Hop.

I admire his determination. Must have some $$$$, didn't RadioOne haul him into court the last time and essentially take the original 102.9 translator?

BTW, speaking of Kiss and Majic, is it just me or are they doing what their non-urban counterparts are doing with music? I hear hardly any 70's Motown or soul, it's like 1985 or later. I know, I'm probably too old for radio.

I remember when 107.5 first signed on (pre the Smooth Jazz era, think 1998), they had a "Jammin Oldies" format that was all 60's and 70's, with a few 80's but nothing past say, 1984. (I think Ray Parker, Jr. here and there and some Debarge). I listened to that station 24/7, it was upbeat, great music, and everyone I knew (white, black, hispanic,- age 25 up) like it. Wonder why it didn't fly? Smooth Jazz was already in decline then, wonder why they flipped it?

I believe that was then called MAGIC 107.5 "Classic Soul and Today's R&B" befored Radio One moved to it CLASSIC SOUL 102.5

LOL, same VO as the former STREETZ 102.9.
Same VO when Hegwood had On Top Communications years ago (Hot 102.1 Virginia Beach, Hot 97-7 Jackson MS...). The sound effects within the spots sound the same...

Mr. Hegwood is another amazing individual. His radio company bit the dust years back. He lost 102.9 to Radio One in a lawsuit. And now he's back with another signal.

But in terms of programming, is he a 1-trick pony? The market has V-103, Hot 107-9, and 102.9 duplicating Hot. How is another Hip-Hop with an inferior signal going to be able to make a living?

Mathamatiically a small sample can repersent the universe (market) if the sample is random. That being said, it would take less than 10 PPM units tuned to 94.5 to make an impact in the Atlanta market. I not saying or implying any thing fishy, but if several of the PPM wearers like "jukebox" urban he could do OK. 97.1 was "jukebox" classic rock and killed off legionary 96 Rock. IMHO a couple of "1.5 or 2's" (6+) for a couple of periods could make this profitable, and could knock one of the top 3 Urban / Urban Ac's out of the top 3 (6+). This might be the little station that could.

Remember that V 103 is all over the map musically depending on time of day so u cant call them all hip hop so i would say Hot is the only direct competitor for Streetz. 94.5 is not necessary an inferior signal to 107.9. I know 107.9 is a C2 compared to 94.5 being a 250watt translator but 107.9 is over 20 miles from downtown and does have signal issues in the core city where a lot of potential audience lives. 94.5 covers intown atlanta better than 107.9 and while the 102.9 translator helps hot some the idea of being able to stick with one signal might make staying on 94.5 easier. I am sure 94.5 will have fewer commercials so that would be nice. I just dont understand why 94.5 aired a christian ac format before moving intown. went from one extreme to another in music

Well, if he played his cards right and played some non mainstream artists like Logic, Big K.R.I.T., and maybe some Aer. Then played deep cuts and mixtapes from artists like Kid Cudi, Kanye West, Big Sean, Juicy J, Wiz Khalifa ect, then they would beat out every Urban station in town. I know every young person would be listening, regardless the signal. Many kids at my highschool don't listen to the radio not because they have iPods, but because they think "the songs played on Hip Hop stations are Sh*t." because its all mainstream hits and artists. Therefore they listen to their own music. I'd say about 70% of the music young people listen to is not even played on the radio. WiLD and Hot 107.9 are the only stations that young people with listen to if they had the radio to listen to hip hop and rap. It's too bad that's all too "risky" and will never be given a chance.

94.5 was an Edgewater/Radio Assist Ministry aka Parrish operation before being swapped around, and inched closer to the ATL. You've got to admire the whit of these clowns, they've managed to plumb the FCC red tape machine for fun and profit, sucking up every available channel to rimshot, shoehorn, move-in to every major and minor market in the country.

Smaller signal, smaller ratings, smaller ad rates....and many more businesses that can afford the lower rates!
He'll do just fine. But he needs to stay SUPER local - at least during the day

The move to intown Atlanta will help gain more listeners inside of 285. Over the last couple of years, HOT 107.9 has added more mainstream R&B songs than ever. The last couple of days, STREETS has played a lot of main ATL artist like Future, Waka Flocka, Travis Porter and Young Jeezy. I was shocked when I heard one of HOT's jock J-Nicks (Stuey Rock) songs being played as well. As of today, STREETS has added there 1st commercial, Club Esso. I think nightclubs will be the main advertisers. Wonder if they'll eventually add jocks and bring in Russ Parr mornings. Hegwood has always used Parr on his stations, even though it's a Radio One show.

I'll take all Atlanta based jocks anyday, no AM syndication. Besides, WVEE is the only urban player to retain a local AM drive. Even WFOX and WBTS kept theirs local till their formats came to an end.

Its already on the new Tower. Broadcasting from the American Tower off of Chester Ave.
