94.5 Reach-FM Translator

Anyone else notice the newly signed on 94.5 translator for Reach-FM is covering Tampa Bay pretty well? According to the records they're broadcasting from damn near the top of the Gandy Blvd / Derby Lane tower at 10 watts. It seems to be covering the area quite well and easily silences WCFB. Taking a peek at their web site and signal map, it appears these people are really abusing the rules when it comes to these translators.

If you want to know if a station is over powered, you need an instrument called a FIM or field intensity meter.
What a waste of RF. This is a result of the great translator invasion. Think of all the nice local powered LPFM's that could have been put up. Instead we have some group that thinks it can hog all that RF spectrum to advance their religion.

No kidding. I thought there weren't any holes on the dial but apparently they found a couple with this one and 95.3 Pinellas Park transmitting Joy-FM. I forgot to mention in the first post... but a funny aside to this translator is it's licensed to Gulfport. So within 2 months, the city of Gulfport goes from "legally" having no radio stations to 2 (WFUS).

So here's what ya do..

Get a legal Part 15 FM transmitter, and drive out to Derby Lane..tune the output frequency to the INPUT frequency of the translator of your choice..chances are good that even with 100mw you would be able to overpower the weak input signal from the "mother-station" and voila..you are ON THE AIR for as long as you don't get caught. Fun? U-bet! Legal, probably not, but you have a legal hobby transmitter, and you "happen" to be in your car near Derby Lane..Hey you like the greyhounds okay?

Unless they are sending the signal via ISDN in that case they are NOT a translator but a radio station..

So here's what ya do..

Get an ISDN circuit, and a codec..grab a set of alligator clips and.... aw crap never mind

Yes, Reach is -- well -- reaching everywhere. I discovered what then was a relatively new one of their translators a few weeks ago on 102.9 while in the Lakeland area. On their link, they list it as Bartow but the city of license is actually Ft. Meade.

Unrelated, but I am just back from the Keys and Everglades and heard what is possibly the worst LPFM ever. WORZ-LP, Ocean Reef Club (north end of Key Largo). Their signal only gets out with an A signal for about 1-1/2 miles, lots of malfunctioning audio (all automated) and they run long blocks of canned commercials for local businesses. Yes, commercials on an LPFMer!

Oh, and don't forget they now have a translator on 89.3 in Clearwater (not listed on their map) which I beleive is W260AV though it doesn't seem to query in the FCC dB. Nonetheless it's there, spewing their cult of personality.

OH Great...

I can hardly wait until they start setting up shop in Manatee / Sarasota counties, jamming up even MORE frequencies... Got enough pirates as it is...

And I see they list 88.3 in New Port Richey. Bet everyone at WMNF will "appreciate" that. What's the point of better reception on FM if the FCC clutters it all with these translators?
