94.5 Sierra Vista

I'm listening to a country station in Sierra Vista, AZ, signal strength is quite weak but I've been listening and recording for 2 hours and they gave no call letters. They simply go "94.5 The Big Cat - Cat Country!". They sound really good and professional, but I'm not exactly sure if they're a legal station. They have one advertisement and it's for Macy's. They have like 4 different sweepers they go through.

Anyone know anything about this station?

There's a country station on 94.5 in Safford - KXKQ - but they don't show "Cat Country" on their website. Might be a satellite format. They're a Class C2 (1700 watts @ 2200' HAAT), but their coverage map shows Willcox to be as far south as they get.

KXKQ has been "Cat Country" for many years. About five years ago they were on 94.1 and broadcast from Mount Graham with tremendous coverage. Then they were downgraded and moved up to 94.3 to allow a rimshot into Phoenix. Most recently they moved to 94.5 with an even weaker signal. This time I think that the purpose was to allow KRDE on 94.1 to upgrade. KRDE is now licensed to San Carlos and they are making claims to be on 100,000 watts but the FCC web site suggests that is a gross exaggeration. KRDE can now be heard in Tucson. Probably also covers the eastern suburbs of Phoenix.

Thanks for that information. They never say their callsign and I've recorded and listened for hours on end. Isn't that illegal?

Of course that's illegal. Stations are required to give their call letters and community of license every hour on the hour and at sign on and sign off. There are a few exceptions where the LEGAL ID may be delayed but not skipped.

Yep, they only say 'Cat Country 94.5!", never a callsign after listening for hours (I don't like country!). I looked up their license and they have no vanity callsign listed. I have sent in a complaint to FCC online about this station never giving out it's callsign.
