Rumours have it that they are switching to Spanish "soon". Dont know how reliable the source is, but thought I would throw it out there!

Considering how 102 Jamz is absolutely murdering them in the ratings (which I predicted before The Beat even launched), I wouldn't in the least be surprised.
______________

Something is cooking. I was listening this afternoon and they were re-directing the audience to two different frequencies. I think CC is being thinking too long to make the switch. I think it will be a good thing. Maybe Cheryl will like to comment about it...

Yet Another One For La Preciosa

Clear Channel CHR/Rhythmic WGBT/Greensboro will flip to the company's Spanish Oldies "La Preciosa" format tomorrow at 5pm, joining the KSJO/San Jose-based network programmed by Alex Lucas. WGBT (94.5 The Beat) has been Rhythmic since February 2003.

This would kind of put an end to the WFMX is going to flip spanish topic I would think.> > > Rumours have it that they are switching to Spanish

Another I told you so.

What was this everyone here told me about WGBT, their excellent ratings and never going Spanish? Even after I posted inside rumors of it. :-D I still know a lot of people in the market, but even the best rumors are still 50/50 at best. There has been a lot of talk of going Spanish at 94.5, but I was guessing Spanish CHR and not oldies. I just don't know if oldies would do as well as CHR, but I will also guess any FM in spanish will be welcomed by the community? 94.5 does have problems in Winston-Salem, where the bulk of the spanish speaking population and spending in the three counties is. 94.1 blocks it, but I don't think it will present too many problems. They do need to be aware Winston-Salem/Forsyth County is their main market and not Greensboro-High Point/Guilford County. Almost twice as much spending money is in Winston-Salem/Forsyth County for them, as well as a larger percentage of the target audience.

I posted this before on the WFMX thread. Here are the numbers for the market.

Census estimates from 2000-2005 are currently showing Winston-Salem as #3 after Charlotte in Raleigh in hispanic growth with around 10,000 new hispanic residents in the past five years. Also Winston-Salem is #3 after Charlotte and Raleigh in hispanic births from 2000-2005. Hispanic spending is at $504 million in Forsyth County, $382 million in Guilford County, $89 million in Davidson County, $74 million in Iredell County and $72 million in Surry County.
______________

hmm...another station to take out my presests...G105 will go in its place

WGBT was a poorly formatted urban from day 1, and CC should have been slapped two times since I KNOW they are better than that..just look at richmond and hampton roads va

Might be wrong here, but Richmond and Norfolk were heritage urbans CC
acquired, not built. But then, outside of San Antonio and OKC, that's what
what they've always done. Buy, not create. When they attempt it on their own,
something like the Beat results.

Very true. This is a company that's the largest not because they're good at what they do, but only because they have the money to buy up the stations that are (and then they ruin those stations to the best of their ability as well!). Look at the track record. Clear Channel couldn't create a brand-new, successful station if their lives depended on it.
______________

Mmm... not necessarily. WGBT is Spanish oldies. They could still flip WFMX to Spanish CHR. I'm not sure how much of a demand there is for it in the market, but given the size of the Spanish-speaking population in the Triad, it could probably be done.

Post 1059 dedicated to WBGG Fort Lauderdale, which used to be one of the better classic rockers I've heard... as BIG 106!

Re: Numbers

CC blew up Oldies "Cool 106.5" WRCL Richmond for Rhythmic "106.5 The Beat" WBTJ in 6/2001. Don't quote me but maybe 6 or so months later shifted focus to Urban. After just several Books, The Beat was on top of market leader "Power 92" WCDX...

It is really interesting. I was listening to “la preciosa” yesterday. I would have selected a different format, more like Viva in Atlanta or even Mega in Houston. Having said that I think it is refreshing to listen the announcers from California, which sound pretty good. At least they aren’t like the ones that currently are on the air at QUE PASA, or LA MOVIDITA, which I believe they use to sell used cars in the past. It is really sad that they can even read a card without making mistakes, beside the stepping on the Spanish language using words that don’t eve exist. I am glad that “Cervantes” the author of “el Quixote” is dead and can’t hear these people.

The Hispanic community of the area is constantly growing, but I don’t think that would support two FM’s.

WFMX could still go Spanish

> So now the BIG question is what to do with WFMX? Everyone and even I had heard Spanish, but now that's out of the question.

WFMX could still go Spanish. What if Clear Channel decided to go ahead and flip 94.5 to Spanish before someone else did. Clear Channel could flip WFMX to Spanish once it makes the move to Clemmons and flip 94.5 to something else. Maybe 94.5 is just a parking lot for the format until 105.7 makes the move.
______________

Re: Numbers

But CC has done well with The Beat in Charlotte. Why couldn't they make 94.5's imaging and formatics similar?

It's just more fun to totally bash CC. I think the Beat made pretty good strides in oulling the numbers that they got....Competing against 2 powerhouse and heritage stations like KZL and Jams ain't easy. I think there may be some oissues with the FMX move in...and CC wanted to make SURE they got a Spanish station on the air.

Latest estimates are a little over 6-percent. I'd tend to agree with you on the last comment.
