94.7 is changing formats today

You, of course, already know that classic hits and ”throwback” rhythmic aren't exactly the same thing. With the possible exception of KXQQ, Audacy's other ”throwback” stations start strong and burn quickly. WBMX and KHTP are about in the same territory that got their previous formats flipped, and KRBQ is well below where KISQ was when it became “The Breeze.“

I don’t know how you sustain a format like this indefinitely, but, even burning quickly, The Block may well do better long-term than country had been doing.
Are you referring to ratings when you mention WBMX Chicago or billing?

They are both formats that play no currents.

As another poster suggested, we now have an entire generation of 25 to 44 year olds who grew up on the music. There is enough of it, particularly if not just hip hop but rhythmic songs are played. I think the format is now deep and mature enough to last quite a while.

I am referring to ratings. Billing, of course, is off from where it was 4 years ago, though that’s the norm everywhere.

WBMX has about the same size audience it had before it flipped with an audience that’s more difficult to sell.

Classic country doesn’t play currents either. So what?

Maybe, but that music burned quickly when it was new. I worked at two top-40 stations during that time, and most of the songs on The Block were never, or were very rarely, played as recurrents. The numbers I see at Audacy's current properties running that format don't seem particularly impressive to me, at least over the long-term. Of course, I'm not the one operating the stations and shouldering the risk. Maybe Audacy has some grand plan to move those stations forward, but I'll believe it when I see it.

To everyone reading, Classic Hip-Hop mixed in with some R&B Throwbacks is very popular now. In my area, we have two stations that do the format but are regulated to HD Channels and Parent Relays. Although the signals on Da' Bomb 96.3 Selma (WALX 100.9 FM HD-3) and Yo! 100.5 Montgomery (WQKS 96.1 FM HD-2) might not be very powerful, they attract a large following and have many advertisers. I wouldn't sell this station short. I'm look for them to have major success. After all, NYC is the birthplace of Rap and it makes perfect sense for them to do this.

Classic hip hop/throwbacks is a risky format but obviously considered more lucrative in nyc than country and lest we forget nyc is the birth place of hip hop. If it fails they could always morph into urban ac to compete directly with BLS. Absolutely nothing to lose with this format flip from country imo.

And, except for the hit everyone took last year due to the pandemic, it's billing better now.

Many operators expect the investment in Black targeted ad campaigns to increase over the next few years, so Black stations should benefit. There is a lot of advertiser attention to ethnic radio in general now.

Based on your statement seems like the Block was a no brainer for Audacy.

I know the mix is a bit different, but Audacy also owns WSTR in Atlanta which has a bit of a Rhythmic AC format but plays throwback hip hop tracks. So it’s obviously a format they believe in. The beauty pageant numbers aren’t great, but it’s a signal that has suffered for a long time.

i think it's safe to say, Country music in America's #1 market is dead (for now), it's lucky to still have on air home, but on HD Radio (which the station may be able to heard via internet streaming). in New York City, i doubt Country would do well even on a good signal for the entire 5 boroughs of the NYC as well as the suburbs of NYC area too in Northern New Jersey, southeastern New York State and Western Connecticut and maybe parts of Northwestern Pennsylvania. instead, it might come back on a rimshot stations in the market, but the true options for this format is SiriusXM, Stream another market's country stations (i.e listen to say for a example the country stations in my part of the country, which is Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas area, which would be both Cumulus owned KSCS New Country 96.3 and KPLX 99.5 the Wolf) on iHeart, TuneIn or Audacy apps, or check up the country music options on Spotify, Pandora and other streaming options.

i doubt Country would do well even on a good signal for the entire 5 boroughs of the NYC as well as the suburbs of NYC area too in Northern New Jersey, southeastern New York State and Western Connecticut and maybe parts of Northwestern Pennsylvania.

The thing is that WNSH did well ratings wise in northern and central NJ. But it doesn't matter if the sales department doesn't actively sell to that market. For a station to "do well," it needs to be able to covert ratings into dollars. That's hard to do if your sales staff is based in Manhattan and has clients mainly in the 5 boroughs.

Clearly, the sales department was tired of selling a station that got good ratings in NJ. They wanted to sell a format that might attract some listeners in NYC. That's what this is about. If you look at the Audacy cluster, none of their stations are even remotely "urban" in nature. They're all formats that can appeal to the suburbs. This new format is an attempt to diversify the sales platform and potentially give them a format that will appeal to someone in NYC. Perhaps get played in a pizza parlor somewhere. It's a reminder to all the programming people out there that you're only as successful as your sales department. If they're telling the GM "we can't sell country," then it's likely the format will be changing at some point. That's probably what happened here.

RJ Curtis understands the struggle of big city country stations. He programmed KZLA in LA for many years. That station shut down for basically the same reason as WNSH.
Somehow, a bit surprisingly to me, country holds its own in LA which is an extremely diverse market. The Bay Area and NYC can’t seem to get the same, however. KKGO doesn’t appear to get great numbers, but it’s going on 15 years old and the owners seem committed. I would have to assume the station’s billing isn’t as dismal as it was for WNSH or the last station in SFO, even as diverse as the market is.

Perhaps in the Go Country situation, there’s a little more leeway since it’s owned locally and is really the primary station the owners have. I just doubt if it weren’t billing well it would have lasted this long. Maybe Mount Wilson knows a secret with KKGO with Emmis didn’t with KZLA, who knows.

WYNY 103.5 also billed a lot more than 94.7. If previous posts about 94.7 billing roughly $100,000/month are true, I seem to remember WYNY was doing roughly as much in a month as 94.7 did all of last year, and that was before being adjusted for inflation. Granted, that was before a worldwide pandemic and two major recessions, but I can’t imagine anyone with a New York area license wanting to do a format that was only billing a million to $1.5 million a year.
It was billing around $200 k a month during the first pandemic year, down from around $5 million each of the previous 5 years. That is still very, very low.
Again, this was 15 or so years ago, but I worked at a station in market #252 that billed about $1.2 million a year. I don’t think it bills anywhere near that today, but, even in these times, you should be able to bill well above that annually just by having an FM license in New York.
Adjusted for inflation, radio as an industry is billing a bit over 60% less now than it did in 2000.

Those who are interested in seeing what 94.7 The Block is playing can click on the link below.

Among the artists who were played during the last hour are Beyoncé, Sean Paul, Ice Cube, T.I., Salt-N-Pepa, Lauryn Hill, 2Pac, Dr. Dre, and LL Cool J.

94.7 The Block On Air Playlist
From Day 1 Friday 10/22/2021:
First song repeated was "Empire State of Mind" - Jay-Z ft. Alicia Keys: 1:05 PM + 6:45 PM
Last "original" song played: "C.R.E.A.M." - Wu-Tang Clan at 8:39 PM (7 hours 34 minutes into the format)
All songs since are repeats.
Thus, approximately 100 songs are on a 5.5 - 7.5 hour rotation.
Release dates of titles mostly fall between 1990-2010 ("Uptown Funk" released 11/2014).
Most of these titles crossed over to Top 40/CHR; a very safe list to start.
Will be interested to see when and how new titles are incorporated in to the playlist; which songs are removed/rested; more...

Playing approximately 15 songs per hour X 24 hours a day X 70 days = 25200 plays
- which winds up landing on New Year's Eve 2021.

Note: the January 2022 PPM Survey period starts Thursday 1/6/2022.

The LA station does not need huge numbers. The owner paid it off about 60 years ago, and has always kept formats that are exclusive, identifiable and which can be run economically: Classical, Jazz, Country. Because LA has more viable commercial FMs than NYC, shares are more fragmented and so a 2 share, give or take, with country does not look so bad. And there are more radio dollars by far in LA than NYC (many think this is due to the reduced drive time listening in NY due to the huge use of public transit).
Emmis was a public corporation, and they paid a considerable price for KZLA that had to be paid, interest and all. And they had to make it all look good to the shareholders, too.

(That is not a criticism of Emmis; I worked for them for half a decade as a consultant and Rick Cummings and Jeff Smulyan are as good as you can find in the industry.)

They are both formats that play no currents.

As another poster suggested, we now have an entire generation of 25 to 44 year olds who grew up on the music. There is enough of it, particularly if not just hip hop but rhythmic songs are played. I think the format is now deep and mature enough to last quite a while.
Are they going after Hot 97.1, Power 105.1, and WBLS 107.5???
