94.7 KTWV almost changed formats to soft urban ac/soft ac

So KTWV is following the Quiet Storm approach like KBLX did in in the 1990's when they faded smooth jazz for soft R&B and Soft AC. All KTWV is doing is following the KOIT and KBLX approach.

I fondly remember KTWV in the late 80's, when it was more eclectic, mixing contemporary jazz, new age and what is now called AAA. Sometime in the 90's, soft R&B replaced the new age and AAA music. Now, soft AC is replacing the contemporary jazz so what we are left with is a soft R&B/soft AC mix. I expect the soft R&B to go next, leaving LA with a new AC to compete with KOST.

Not to spread scurrilous rumors, but there's a thread on the LA discussion board about the Wave becoming "Fresh 94.7" tomorrow.

eclectic and new age music simply moved to the AAA format. Well KTWV and KKSF in the 1990's started to follow the KBLX approach with contemporary jazz and soft R&B called the Quiet storm and ran it under a different name as smooth jazz because KBLX had rights to the name the Quiet Storm.

the thread starter brought up KIFM in San Diego as the good approach. well, KIFM is in a free-fall in the latest ppm, and as a result they are pretty close to being 1:1 instrumental to vocal now. kool & the gang, the police, stuff they would never touch is in rotation now.

That's unfortunate, but I concede that it is inevitable. As others have stated, PPM has not been friendly to this format. And with the spate of negativity towards instrumentals in general (despite the fact some of the best music this genre has seen in years is being made now), I expect this trend towards the Jhani Kaye/Kepler-conceived Chillout Radio approach to continue for what terrestrial radio Smooth Jazz stations remain. The end of an era is near, guys, at least for this go-around. Find yourself a good Internet stream and embrace it. They are out there. And with your support, perhaps this format can sneak its way back onto a few sticks in a couple of years when listeners get fed up with overplayed Soft A/C garbage. But make no mistake about it. Internet is the FUTURE of radio, and the trending numbers do not lie.

As far as I know, KTWV is not a BA Chillout affiliate... since the network just started yesterday. And Jhani is not working with BA. KTWV is moving in a totally AC direction, hardly a thing to be confused with chill.

KIFM has been dropping since the PPM began, 11 books ago...

David, I am WELL aware of that. Where did I say that KTWV is a BA "Chillout" affiliate??? The point is, Kepler's new direction and the direction Jhani Kaye is going with KTWV are not as dissimilar as you would lead people to believe. I have been monitoring KTWV's playlist passively out of idle curiosity, and have heard the demo for Kepler's "Chillout Radio." Let's just say that the products are, at a minimum, first cousins. And let's clarify something else while we are at it. Kepler's "Chillout Radio" has nothing to do with "chill" music, and Kepler himself admitted as much. The point is, neither product is worthy of discussion for a Smooth Jazz forum, as neither will feature contemporary jazz music.

On that subject, last night, I have noticed KTWV in LA and WSJT in Tampa background of their sites go from a dark blue to more of a lighter shade of blue. Probably means nothing, but I thought I would point it out. ::)

"the Jhani Kaye/Kepler-conceived Chillout Radio approach" ...pretty much "implies" affiliation. Gut would tell me each is staying as far apart from one another as possible. Your talking big differences in revenue (and that ain't the only big difference). Besides, can't speak to their relationship. Paul and Allen collaborated through-out the years. Sometimes closely, other times-not so much. Tied to the hip out of necessity and history and yes, passion. For all the negative regarding BA you could find those that were there who'd readily admit Allen could be your greatest asset/strength when dealing with GM's who didn't have a clue. That Chillout has nothing to do with Chill is moot at this point and was pretty much a given. Did you honestly think for a nano-second BA would offer up a "Chill" format? That Bill used Four-80-East as the go-to bed to start the promo was his own talented sense of humor more than anything else, I'm sure. Besides, what the heck-why not use it? Chillout is just another brand name like Fresh or Mix or whatever...may as well be called "Cookout." There's an idea, Cookout Radio. Mmmmmm, just think of the possibilities!

Soft A/C, Smooth A/C, Hot A/C, AC/DC, Chillout, Cookout, or whatever the hell you want to call it, NEITHER presentation does any favors for contemporary jazz artists, PERIOD, end of story. And that's the point. It's tired, overplayed A/C vocal garbage that has been dragging the format down for well over a decade. I am not seeing "assets" for contemporary jazz artists. I am seeing NOTHING but liabilities.
