Wow Not what I expected WBCN 1660 changed format to Southern Rock. I guess 94.7 is a translator? The station is also heard on WSOC HD2 and WKQC HD3. Not my kind of music. I'm surprised the conservative audience isn't upset by it. How come there hasn't been anything posted here?

seems like a good idea, the are using Mr Bill formerly of the WRFX to voice the station. The conservative talk format on 1660 never seemed to generate any ratings, are those folks all listening to WBT anyway?
The ones who like John Boy and Billy probably like it.
It's probably popular with your pickup truck and Confederate flag types.
I am sure there are plenty of WBCN 1660 Listeners that are upset with the change. I got a text from a Client the evening of 06-19-17. They started with the Smoke at 6:00am that day. My Client was livid, having left WBT so he could listen to WBCN. He has HD Radio in the Car, but not in his house. So he was happy when, several months ago, I told him 94.7 had started rebroadcasting WBCN, and very *un*happy on 06-19-17, when he got home to tune in to 94.7.
Time will tell whether this Translator can gain enough Listeners based on the Signal it throws in and around Charlotte. It's too weak IMHO. There is no power upgrade path for them to take. IMHO they would have a better chance on 102.5 MHz than they do on 94.7 MHz.
As far as getting anything posted to the RD Board, I've been meaning to take the time to log in and make a post. Been kind of busy with work and other things. Steve.

On the subject of translators and LPFM I think they are wrecking the FM band. WFBC 94.7 used to come in just fine in and around Charlotte, Same for 98.7 Simon in Greensboro. Now you get outside of Charlotte and several stations are fighting for the frequency making it totally unlistenable. There are other examples but those are just 2 I could think of. It's a mess!
Important to note that WBCN and WFNZ are no longer owned by the same company. Entercom owns WFNZ and the translator on 102.5. Beasley owns WBCN and the translator on 94.7.
94.7 is not the best translator. He is directional to protect the LPFM in Mooresville.

WFBC is at 93.7. However, people have complained about BBN keeping that from being heard in Charlotte.
Thanks for that correction. It's been a long time since I listened to WFBC. However 2 or it sounds like maybe 3 stations sometimes fight over 94.7 depending on where you are.
This started a long time ago in Florida where the FCC gave out frequencies in Orlando that matched the ones in Miami/Fort Lauderdale. A Fort Lauderdale station that could be heard almost all the way to Orlando had it's coverage cut in half by an Orlando station on the same frequency. The result was neither one could be heard when you got between the two cities, they'd fight back and forth.

Seems to be a unique local or regional approach that should have some appeal and if they can take just a bit of WRFX or WXRC mission accomplished.

Actually I have been enjoying The Smoke very much. In addition to being found @ 94.7 MHz, you can also tune into it on 103.7-HD2 -&- 104.7-HD3. The Latter will allow those outside the Charlotte Metro to see what all the excitement is about. I've enjoyed listening to this music format, especially when they play the Georgia Satellites, Kentucky Headhunters, Blackfoot, Wet Willie, Alabama Shakes, and Blackberry Smoke ALL... on the SAME Station!
I encourage those outside the Charlotte Metro to Tune In and Check It Out. Very refreshing.

I don't know how much time I'll have to try this when I go to Charlotte in about a week. The priority for me has to be WAVO when I can pick up that station.
I never thought Alabama Shakes fit in a rock format (I also don't care for them) but they might fit here. WBRF Galax VA does an "outlaw country" show and I'm guessing some of their artists show up here. I heard one song by Chris Stapleton I didn't like which would fit perfectly here.

I just couldn't give up my music. And by the time the network news came on I was out of range. But both times that I changed stations for a few seconds, I was hearing off-the-wall songs I had never heard before. This is definitely not the same thing you would hear on classic rock radio.
The Smoke Plays "Fire Away" by Chris Stapleton. I am guessing this is one you don't like?
The Smoke has also been known to play Songs from Drivin' and Cryin' !!! I love hearing the Songs I haven't heard in over 2 decades, at least on the Public Airwaves. Hearing them played in a Night-Club does not count...

WBCN acquired the calls from the FCC so their moniker would be WBCN - the "Boston Concert Network". The same for WHCN/Hartford at it's inception: WHCN - the "Hartford Concert Network".
I didn't see this. I'm not going to remember which Chris Stapleton song I didn't like, but there are going to be some.
I don't know the names of any of the songs, but Chris did two songs on SNL that are surely Southern rock. The first one I didn't like. The second came close enough to sounding country that at some point in the future, maybe I could like it. Then he won a Grammy and they played a song when he walked up to the stage. I didn't like that one, but it too was Southern rock.
I do hope 94.7/1660 AM sticks around, like the mix, I have heard two Jerry Reed songs "East Bound and Down" and "When You're Hot You're Hot" lately, they are paying attention IMO to this station. Also noticed they have hired Jack Daniel to do PM drive on Smoke and K 104.7 .. They seem to be working hard on the station to me.
