94.7 The Block

What is interesting of the air talent makeup of the station is Nick Cannon really doesn't appeal to African American ADULTS, and Ed Lover used to sound like NY when he was on HOT 97 and Power but now there is nothing new or a reason to listen. As I wrote in earlier posts WBLS will not take a ratings hit from The Block nor will HOT or Power.
Again, the format is targeted at not just Blacks... the music has appeal with Hispanics and urban non-Hispanic whites.
If anything WBLS posted their largest numbers in a few months in the February PPM month. When budgets are tight and you can build a real local live team, it will be very very tough to win for Block.
Remember, the average PPM meter carrier hears 6 stations each week. This is not about "taking" listeners but, instead, becoming part of the station mix that listeners have.

The maybe the goal is something other than to win. Not every station can be #1. There are lots of radio stations in the NY area. Almost all of them are not #1. So maybe there's another reason for this format on this station at this time.
And remember, agencies generally don't look at share and don't buy one book. In the rolling average, there are two #1 stations and 8 #2 stations and another 8 or 9 #3 stations.

I thought it targeted Urban music lovers?? I grew up on Throwbacks when I was little.

I think its appeal is with Churban throwback partisans And the typical Churban station appeals to Blacks, Hispanics and non-Hispanic whites, with some markets that have more Hispanics than Blacks showing greater Hispanic audience than Blacks.

Interesting observation: Shelley Wade is live, in-studio today, according to her social media. Was expecting her to voicetrack, like so many others at Audacy NY at the moment.

Status quo for the 3rd book at 1.2. Would be interesting to know if it makes money. And what it's 18-34 etc numbers are. Clearly Audacy is invested in it with new hirings.

Three books in is way to early to predict profitability. It's still building staff and creating an image; a rather dumb slow start though.

Didn't make the top 5 there either, did it?
And it won’t either. Ever. But if it makes the top 12 to 15 in the target, it will do fine. Remember, they buy ratings, not share and # 8 is the same as #13 in rating.

I believe the construction permit to move WXBK 94.7's antenna to a WOR 710 AM tower expires the middle of next month.
No one on this board has reported that there is any indication that the engineering work has been taking place at the site. If work starts over the next few days, would it be possible to complete it on time?
Could the due date be extended? I also wonder whether the signal change on sister station WMAS FM, a requirement for this move, has been completed.

As well, Barry, sez Radio-Locator, WMAS has about two weeks to go directional. May 15th.

The supplied map I saw shows the tower in the same spot it occupied when I worked there. The place was WHVY at the time, an AoR station. The stick was a self-supporting one then.

The engineers here will know what is involved in making an FM station directional, time-wise and otherwise. But in my tenure there, 'WHVY' was concerned chiefly with the so-called Pioneer Valley area. The proposed newer coverage suggests the station still is of that vision. There isn't too much appeal to the east and west of Springfield; just north and south. Never was any notable response otherwise. So which station is poition-jockeying here? Or do both of them have their shoelaces tied together ?

Didn’t Cumulus initially apply for the 94.7 CP and hasn’t it been renewed before? I’m wondering if Audacy is going to let it expire since they seem to either not care or be able to move forward with it.

I’d think with the Block format it would be even more beneficial to inch it closer to NYC. There’s more to gain than lose as far as listeners.
