They flipped just a few days into the Fall book and they've put up lots of billboards. First trend was up slightly, but how will they do overall? Which stations will suffer?
Edited by Large_106 on 11/27/05 07:06 AM.

Santana?! That's "True Oldies"??! The first thing I hear when I start listening is freak'in SANTANA! How about Buddy Holly or Elvis?

What a joke.

True Oldies channel is:

Late 50s
All 60s
Early 70s

Santana is in the early 70s part of the playlist.
______________

I would rank some of CCR's 70's music right there with Elvis or Buddy Holly.

Now, now, now....you KNOW the answer you will get if we were to ask whoever is programming this station...say it with me, you've heard it enough...

"But it TESTED well!!"

Call me an old fogey, call me a jerk, call me naive, but I miss the days when a strong PD and a strong MD made decisions based on their gut, their sense of the market and their knowledge of the community instead of testing everything half to death and allowing the numbers to dictate what used to be done by talented programmers.

Then again, when I started I was dropping needles on vinyl, so I'm obviously completely out of touch with today's radio.

I have no problem with oldies stations playing early 70s (and all FM oldies stations do).Isn't 35 years old enough to qualify as a true oldie? My earliest memories are from 1969/1970 and to me it seems like many many lifetimes ago, almost like another dimension of time and space.

Since 50s were considered oldies in the 70s, it's more than fair to call songs from 1970 oldies today.

I'm going to say no farther then 1973 or so. Stations that play 70s music that goes way past 1975 and play it back to back and more 70s then 60s don't count as oldies in my book.

But if they play an occational 1970-1974 track its fine. I've been hearing EARLY 70s since I started listening to oldies in the early 90s.
______________

In an article I read Scott Shannon was quoted to saying that he'd never thought he would wind up adding early 70s and dropping some of the 50s on The True Oldies Channel but he got so many requests from listeners for it.

Then there's the oldies stations that are now playing 80s songs. Examples include:

ABC Oldies Radio (Satellite)
Billy Joel - Uptown Girl (1983)
Beach Boys - Kokomo (1988)

Westwood One's Oldies Channel (Satellite)
Bill Medley - (I've Had The) Time Of My Life (1987)

WRIT Milwaukee
Billy Joel - Uptown Girl (1983)
Peabo Bryson - If Ever You're In My Arms (1983)
Hall & Oates - You've Lost That Lovin Feeling (1980)
Beach Boys - Kokomo (1988)
Paul Davis - Cool Night (1981)
Elton John - I Guess Thats Why The Call It The Blues (1983)

That sounds EXACTLY like Chicago's WRLL, 1690 AM. Cherish it. Most Oldies fans around the country would kill to have a station like that in their market.

Exactly right VP. But then those were the days when anything below a 3 got you fired. Now you're promoted to senior vp of programming. The dumbing down of America hit radio many a moons ago.

Very well put, Jeremy. Sounds pretty much like my oldies listening experience, except substitute "early-to-mid 80s" for "early 90s."

Sure, it's satellite-fed, but I personally love WZZN. I listen to it online quite a bit; I'd love to be able to bypass Q-95 in Indy on 94.7 sometimes to be able to hear it in the car. I love the station because it reminds me a lot of the old WKLR 93.1 in Indy from the late 80s until '94.

I am going to enjoy it while I can.

Amen, Brother Paul!

Another reason that I'm fixing the radio stations instead of talking on them! Well that, and I kind of sucked. But that's a whole different thread for another day...

It was nice to be on the air at a radio station in the 80's getting 20 shares, though.
______________

The older we get, the definition of this format changes, huh?

This station has been changing formats every so often.
that it is just like as we often change our pair of socks
on a daily basis.

But instead, 94,7 keep changing their format like every
six months or so.

The most recent song they're playing on the regular playlist is "Old Time Rock and Roll"--and that's the only Seger song they've played, unless "Ramblin' Gamblin' Man" was played and I didn't hear it. During the World Series, Shannon slipped "Celebration" and "Don't Stop Believin'" in the local morning drive list (satellite is dark until 10 a.m., so for now he does custom voice tracks for morning drive) but dropped them once the Series was over.

And "Evil Ways" is the only Santana they're playing on the regular list--I think I heard the single version of "Black Magic Woman" as either a weekend feature or in the countdown feature.

Their first Top 10 was "Evil Ways"--which was early 1970. I don't believe that "Jingo," the first single from the first album, even hit the Top 40 nationally, although WCFL played it here.
