94.7 Updates

PAY CLOSE ATTENTION HERE:

If 94.7 is going to be part of a Cumulus country music network (read: NOT local) then this is just the beginning of the future of music radio on the FM on all formats.

With CC laying off as many people as they did as well as pushing their iHeartRadio brand, you could see the writing on the wall. The flagships will most likely be here and Los Angeles and as you do long distance travels, you'll tune in to another station and hear the same thing you've heard in New York, and as you go to another city, you'll still hear the same thing. It won't be just syndication anymore. And it won't be local....that flavor will be GONE.

I wish the country fans the very best. But yeah, this is the beginning and it's not good all around. :(

I guess maybe they should move Family Radio over to Mount Kisco, NY and it will be heard on 106.3. WFRH, another Family Radio affiliate at 91.7 in Kingston isn't going anywhere anytime soon. 91.7 had a weak signal when it comes into Poughkeepsie.

with RXP 2.0 doing so well and the need for rock in NYC I see it going Rock like WRRV

I can't see that happening. WDHA 105.5 already has the rock format covered and the majority of the WFME coverage area overlaps with WDHA's. I really don't think there is room for 3 rock stations if you include Q104.3.

ESPN Sports Talk is going to be the likely format.

That's the buzz coming from various web sites, I've just checked out.

My own prediction will be this too.

I can see it happening.

I don't know what planet you're posting from, but ESPN has an outlet on 98.7 in NYC. Why would Cumulus run ESPN sports even if 98.7 weren't there?

I'm still predicting talk as the new format, for 94.7 FM.

P.S. If they went Country, I would be shocked. I don't see it happening, unless Cumulus thought they could sell it.

Right now the American Country Awards show is airing on Fox. According to the Verizon Fios "What's Hot" widget, this is the 14th most watched show on tv right now. That's pretty good considering the 150+ channels available on Fios. So there is obviously an interest in country music in this area.

I think we can assume it's either rock, country, or talk (wabc on fm). In my opinion, Cumulus does a terrible job of programming rock and a really good job with country. I don't see how they can sell country in New York, though. I can see the response of potential buyers: "Advertise on a country station? In New York?". While everyone thinks country, I see WABC fm just as viable of an option and easier to sell. But if thats the case, the question remains why the WNSH calls? Another market, maybe?

Trade reports indicate that Cumulus is putting together a new national Country Music format brand called "Nash FM."

http://radioinsight.com/blog/headlines/netgnomes/79538/is-cumulus-planning-a-national-country-brand/

And it would makes sense to put the WNSH calls on its brand new station in the largest market, which also happens to be where all the big ad agencies are located around Madison Avenue. If you want to sell national spots on all your "Nash" stations it would help to make a good impression by having the big agency folks able to listen at home, and in their cars.

Putting WABC talk on AM doesn't seem to make much sense now. The AM has a weekly cume of about one-million in a 16-million market, and WOR is about to add stronger AM competition, so becoming your own competition on FM and further diluting that potential audience doesn't seem like the smartest thing to do. And then there is the older demos on FM thing. The new FM station just has a lot more potential with another format, and Cumulus is good at Country, and also wants to promote its new national Country brand to the advertising community. Once again, just follow the biggest money potential for the big corporation, not necessarily the individual station like in the old days.

Random thought out of left field... A/C, and go after Lite... It may not be number one, but if it can shave 2-3 points off Lite...

The problem with that is the format is too similar to PLJ, so it would be like competing against themselves. Plus they also have Fresh to contend with. Its not just Lite.

As WFME 94.7 has not been broadcast in HD, I wonder whether Cumulus will make the investment to add it to the signal. Their two FM's in this area, WPLJ and WFAS do broadcast in HD, but the latter has never had an HD2.
