94.7 WFME For Sale?

I am posting this on the Jersey board because WFME is a Newark, NJ station...

Is Family Radio looking to sell its powerhouse 94.7 WFME? A post on the Philly board mentions how Family Radio was looking to sell some stations in the Northeast, including 106.9 WKDN/Camden and 94.7 WFME/Newark. Here is the link to that post: http://www.radio-info.com/mods/board?Post=699692&Board=philadelphia

Is it possible that Family Radio is willing to sell off their powerhouse FM stations (and make a killing in revenue gains!) and reinvest in AM stations? What is their financial situation - are they strapped for cash that they need to sell stations? This may not be a bad idea since the AM stations would be cheaper to buy and still maintain a decent coverage area equivalent to the FM stations. There are a few AM stations in the NYC area that have a decent signal into the 5 boroughs in which Family Radio may consider (i.e. 620/WSNR, 1430/WNSW, 1660/WWRU).

Sounds like a big stretch to me, but has anybody heard about this? Remember, Family Radio sold their powerhouse FM station in San Francisco last year, so this could be another part of their overall strategy. But part of me believes this scenario is just too good to be true! I live near Newark, so 94.7 is practically in my backyard. I would love to wake up one day and hear AC, Oldies, Classic Hits, or Country on that frequency!

Since they sold their frequency in San Francisco, it is a possibility. It would be pretty exciting to get a new station on 94.7 FM. Here's the link to a discussion about what some posters would want on WFME: http://www.radio-info.com/mods/board?Board=newjersey&Post=548396&page=

I'm sure we're going to hear some ideas again including oldies and country.

Here we go!

I dont think thier going to sell 94.7 WFME... I would crap my self if thy did, I dont see it happening.. This discussion has been brought up time and time again...

Beleive it or not, I know folks that live in NYC that are not what you would consider "Christians" and listen to WFME from time to time

Though I personally would not mind having 94.7 WFME to put a Christian CHR/Rock on in NYC! *dreams* :) If only Bill Gates was a friend of mine.. *laughs*

That post isn't exactly from a reputable source.

DC/Baltimore has been the next market rumored to be sold by Family, but I haven't heard anything about it for a while. Family bought some peashooter AMs in Baltimore, but have so far kept the FM.

It's clear it's going to happen eventually, but I think a sale of 106.9 and 94.7 is too far off to even begin to speculate.

Family Radio hurting for cash? that';s the funniest thing I've heard all year!!

Brother Camping is ROLLING in the green stuff, despite what you might hear on the air............

I'm curious. WFME is licensed to Newark. Why would you want
it to become a New York City station? Are there too many
FM stations in Newark now?

I don't care where WFME is licensed to, but I, along with almost everyone else here, don't like the format that is on 94.7 now. It is a waste of a station.<P ID="signature">______________

My question was addressed to xmusicmatt, not Nick D.

The spanish station on 105.9 does not call it self "Escucha de radio en Nueva Jersey and not New york (ok my spanish lacks) apperently 105.9 license Newark NJ wants to target NYC, so why cant WFME also cater to NY too?

WFME has a target audience and I am sure they have listeners in NY and in NJ. City of License is just that, City of License.

I understand many folks dont care for the relgious programming, but its no diff then those that dont like hip hop or the many spanish stations. But I know those stations fill a need, so does WFME to those that do like that programming.

I'm sure most listeners in Newark don't really care whether the station they are listening to specifically is licensed to that city. Since stations like 105.9, 100.3, 94.7 reach most or all of the NYC metro area, and the first two broadcast from the top of the ESB in NYC, they'd be silly to cater solely to Newark, just like WKTU would be silly to just cater to, say, Lake Success, when they also cover the entire metro area.

Besides, if you want to spin the argument on its head, how does 94.7 currently specifically target the listeners of New Jersey, other than the fact that its stick is in the state? Last I checked, Family Radio is a national network.

It may be a waste of a station for YOU, but that doesn't make it a waste of a station for the people who listen to it. They get a higher rating than both WBGO and WFUV, both very highly regarded stations nationally. The fact that you don't happen to like it means that you personally would like to see the format changed. Nothing wrong with that. That doesn't translate into saying that objectively the format *should* be changed. That's something else entirely.

It's also true that Harold still can't quite face the reality that the city of license rules mean virtually nothing anymore. It's a damn shame, but it's true. Maybe someday it'll change again, but this is the reality we have in 2006.

If I had a hundred million dollars I would buy it. I would put the old WCBS FM Oldies format as it was in the 90's on. I would bring back most of the old CBS FM Jocks and staff. I would name it 94-7 Gold and keep the WFME Calls. I would focus on 1964-69 along with 4 or 5 pre 64 oldies per hour, 3 or 4 70's an hour, 2 or 3 80's an hour and a 90's per shift. I would bring back the doo wop Shop with Don K Reed also on 11-2, Max Kinkle mid mornings, Bob Shannon afternoons, Bobby Jay in evenings, mayne famous Amos in mornings, Mike MCCann, Dan taylor, and many others weekends, Mike McCann with the Top 20 oldies sountdowns at 5 PM weekends, Saturday Night Sock hops.

They probably have more listeners than "Jack FM", "Free FM", and WNEW-FM. ::)

While we can't say numbers on this board, I believe their 12+ AQH ratings are equal to those of Free FM. I may be wrong though but they are definitely somewhere in that vicinity.
