94.7

Has anyone else noticed that the dj's are starting to say "Chicago's classic hits and oldies station." I just started hearing it this week. Greg Brown is filling in for Mackay and i started to hear him say this yesterday. I wonder what this means for the station or if they are just trying to slowly filter out the term "oldies" just like wcbs now. Has anyone else heard this or is this the way they always said it?

It might just be a case of attempting to own the "classic hits" phrase - in case someone else elects to throw their hat in the ring. The unfortunate thing is that its hard to own two positions at the same time.

Even though Taylor on Radio printed that WJMK would NOT dump Jack for Oldies, there are some within CBS Radio who believe that Oldies/Classic Hits will indeed return to 104.3. So wouldn't it make sense for 94.7 to try to make those positioning statements their own? But IMHO, if indeed 104.3 does drop Jack, they'll musically position themselves a bit more current than 94.7.

I haven't listened to 94.7 that much lately, but yesterday I heard them play Survivor / Eye of the Tiger which, although is old, isn't really and "Oldie" yet. Perhaps the positioner was changed to accommodate songs like this?

Wasn't WDRV considered "classic hits" when it first debuted?

Maybe as the Drive has gone in more of a typical classic rock direction of late, 94.7 sees an opening to capture some of their disgruntled ex-listeners.....although playing "Eye of the Tiger" seems a very odd way of doing so.

"Eye Of The Tiger" is not only a huge regional song for Chicago (Jim Peterik is quite popular here), it technically was a hit song. A huge one at that. It's always a bit surprising when songs you heard in high school pop up on "classic hits" or "oldies" formats, but that's part of getting older!

Oh, I'm not complaining that EotT is not an aging song, or that it shouldn't be played on WZZN. I fully recognize that I'm getting "longer in the tooth" and that these songs are having a growing "nostalgiosity" with the passing of each year!

And, I've said it many times on these boards:

"Oldie" is in the ear of the beholder.

But, back in the days of WLS and WCFL, an "oldie" could be a song 3 to 5 years old.

So, by that chronological comparison only, "Eye Of The Tiger", now more than 20 years old fits that definition.
