94.7's Oldies Format After ABC is Sold

D

So, do you think oldies will still be on 94.7 after ABC is sold which looks like that could happen very soon. It would be a shame to see the format go after just a few months especially if the ratings are decent. Whoever takesover ABC, do you think they will just drop oldies, keep it as is, or go local and adjust to a 60s & 70s format and dump the 50s stuff.

That's a good question, being that there are billboards all over the loop.

I think ABC just cut the overhead 100% from that station and used some outdoor money from WLS' budget to make an attempt at marketing---just so the station would look better on paper for a sale. Remember, they had a huge programming payroll at that station for years and never had any success with it under any banner. Now, there's no overhead. So at least the station won't be a NEGATIVE on cashflow, which is how radio stations are valued. Same ratings...no cost = improved cashflow on the cluster. That is how things are done today.

Why do you want to even think of dropping the oldies format?
What the hell! WRLL AM-1690 had a rotten lousey signal,
and the old WJMK Oldies 104.3 keeps on playing the same damn
100 songs; over! over! over! over! and over again!

I like the True Oldies 94.7 because they have over 2500 songs
and each day it is different! Especially they play the B sides.
Oldies songs I never heard before or haven't heard in a real long time!!!...

No, I don't want to have the format dropped, but who knows what new ownership will do. If there were no rumors of ABC Radio being sold, it wouldn't be an issue.

Is the production still bad on the station? You know, where they fade down the beginning of a song to run commercials?

What about the jive-ass voice tracking?

Yep.

Yep.

Not hearing 2500 titles nor B-sides, either.

If Cumulus or Entercom got it, think we'd see someone going CHR to take on Kiss & B-96 ala ZOK or Kiss Milwaukee?

Actually, given the history of that frequency, there's going to be a large credibility factor to whatever goes on it.

I vote for contemporary christian...which is a long way from its "Hell 94.7"
days!!

As I understand it, the ABC networks are going to be included in the sale (except for Radio Disney, ESPN and their stations), so there is an incentive to stay with the format.

And even though things can change, ABC is advertising for a PD and looks like they want to follow through on being local at least drive times and Saturday night. On the other hand, it may be hard to commit jocks without the kind of contracts that new owners may not want to pick up.

I think there is a commitment to the format right now from ABC. The only questions is if a new owner will have the same commitment.

Oldies should be dropped because it is a dead format. If you want to hear oldies, listen to your records/tapes/cd's. There is also Satellite radio and AM.
Edited by Tim B. on 11/16/05 10:24 PM.

"Heaven 94.7" maybe? Just kidding... couldn't resist! (it just rhymes far too well)

Maybe you should be a rapper :)

I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed.

Me either. Lots of weird versions of songs, though. Maybe it's still the same 250 songs, but 10 versions of them?

The station should have the same selection that they have with the 'Shannon' format, but not have Shannon 24/7.

Too bad ABC is selling. I was hoping to hear WLS call letters with Jingles.

I always thought a retro radio station would be worth the try, using legendary call letters and all. But I cannot think of a station that has attempted such a thing.

Isn't ABC selling their satellite services too?

If so, then wouldn't you think Shannon's format would go with it?
______________

I've only been listening for a couple of weeks, but I haven't heard that. When was the last time you listened?

Well, you might as well say that FM radio dead also,
because of the competition of satelite radio with more
choices of wide variety of music.
But keep one thing in mind, some people can't afford satellite radio,
because some people rather have oldies for free, instead of paying for it...

There's just way too many Christians radio stations on both AM & FM
Why do we need more of them anyway???..

> Maybe you should be a rapper :)

Hey! what about a radio station for Gansters? or Hoodlums?
they love hip hop & rap! especially if it's hard core.
just like that one radio station in chicago who was pirate.
