94.9 Lite FM Concedes, paves way for B98.5 Landslide

In a move that had been anticipated for days, Lite FM conceded defeat in the hotly contested race to be number one for listening at work. "It's just not meant to be," stated Pat McDonnell, VP/GM of Clear Channel Atlanta. "We don't want to end up being the Ross Perot of this race. No matter what we do, B98.5 keeps winning. To all of you who helped in the election effort, we thank you. Go get some rest."

McDonnell went on to encourage those present to mount a write-in campaign for the independent candidate 104.7 The Fish, though he did admit such campaigns are extremely difficult to pull together, and victories are rare. Mcdonnell also expressed an interest in lobbying the FCC for term limits, effectively knocking B98.5 out of the runnings altogether in future elections.

The mood over at the WSB studios was much more upbeat. While no one would speak for the record, it was clear that with Lite dropping out of the race, another victory was close at hand.

A Lot of Free Time On My Hands, along with Not Much on TV, contributed to this story.

Now in their TV ads when they said: "B-98.5 is voted again the most listened-to radio station in Atlanta", they will be telling the truth. And I bet that'll be right after the christmas music ends on 12/26/06.

You're not a Cox employee, at all.

Personally, I think more listeners from 94.9 will move to The River after Christmas. Still a Cox station, but not WSB-FM. I'll admit it, 97.1 is on my presets.

Ha ha

What is funny is that I am actually a Cox Employee, just not for Cox Radio.

I do agree with you about the River
I guess two Cox stations competing to be number one would be kind of like the party primaries...

Three if you count WSB. Hell, four if you count WALR-FM.

The sad thing is some of these CC stations that are struggling to stay in the top 20, used to be consistantly in the top 10. When GST was on AM/FM (and had local talent, along with local newscasts that were longer than 90 seconds), it was in the top 10 frequently. We all know the history of the others such as Peach and 96 Rock. CC has destroyed these stations to the point where they can start from the ground up. And hell....maybe that was the goal. It's all they can do with GST now, and the process has already started for the others.
