94.9 WJJF Now On The Air

The official launch is due Monday - but their stream is up and running:

So far, I've heard the Wall Street Journal Report end at 6 AM and go into CBS News. After the news... silence... for about twenty minutes until The Osgood File. Then a local news update at 6:30 AM and then... more silence. I'm guessing this is a dry run.

Meanwhile, 94.9's got their morning show: Lee Elci, who's leaving WXLM (which you may recall was previously on FM for a spell).

Oh, and the article states that Red Wolf Broadcasting is now known as something called "Full Power Radio."

Having read the link to The Day's article, it is apparent that Mr. Fuller hasn't read the latest Arbitron ratings book recently. If he did he would have seen WDRC AM's less than stellar ratings with their C-list conservative lineup. Maybe it might work on Long Island, but I doubt it. ???

Full Power Radio's just one of the many DBA's and LLC's that Fuller uses. Add to that list Fuller Broadcasting International, Impact Radio, Line of Sight LLC, the former Astro Broadcasting Systems, and I'm sure a few others. Gary Lee Horn is also in the Red Wolf fold, doing traffic reports.

secondary issue. The less than stellar signal would be primary. The first problem is the killer co-channel religious translator in Montville. It's only 6 watts, but at 579 feet AAT at an old long lines site, the coverage is great. Now all Fuller has to do is file an interference complaint, but that'll still take time to get it shut down. It rebroadcasts WCSE-LP Ledyard which has local programming and some of the usual religious satellite stuff.

Second, anyone familiar with WELJ will tell you that the signal covers New London alright, but full coverage of New London county is iffy. Forget Long Island, there's nothing out there on the North Fork anyways. I wouldn't be surprised if this isn't the last stop for WJJF.

Licensed to Montauk NY, but no mention of serving the COL. And forget about a local presence. If you live in Montauk and want to visit the studios it'll require 3 ferry rides and about $130. Just like WELJ.

Tertiary issue: It's one thing that most of 94.9's broadcast day will consist of bird-fed programming, and for the most part, second-tier programming, but their afternoon hours programming appear to be tape delayed, and that's a no-no, especially up against Rush's show. It's like bringing a toothpick to a knife fight.

Meanwhile, as Lee Elci leaves for 94.9, Ray Hackett is going to get a weekly show on 980 - and he writes that "it's likely that I'll be continuing my association" with Elci on 94.9. Really? How does that work? Wait - Hackett's show is on early Saturday mornings, so it's probably a brokered deal, so he probably won't be an "employee" of Cumulus...

Lee Elci's in the middle of his first show on 94.9. He acknowledged that the station is online only and welcomed those listening "on their app." Imagingwise, I hear the voiceover for WBMW and even WBMW middayer Heidi west doing imaging for the station, or at least Lee's show...

I've been thinking about the logo that prominently features the CBS eye logo and I think it's an interesting move that plays up the quality and respect of the CBS brand, even though the station carries very little CBS content. Outside of top-of-the-hour newscasts and the Osgood File, there are no other CBS elements. I think it's a good move on their part, if not a little misleading.

Actually, out of 155 CBS Radio O&O's, I can only think of one that features the eye logo: WCBS 880. I can't think of any other stations (except for ESPN Radio stations) that prominently use a network logo in their own image.

It's an element that stuck out to me, and I find interesting. I think it may really help give credibility to a new station.

Actually, CBS' newest all-newser in DC (99.1 WNEW) works the "eye" symbol into their logo...

WJJF's TOH jingle is unique, to say the least. "94.9 News Now, And C-B-S!", usually syncing up with the tone signaling the start of the newscast. Safe to say, Full Power is going the full gamut to pound their incorporation with CBS into listeners' ears.
