94 WIP will not work

Something tells me they have no inclination to stomach a third round of Missanelli at CBS.

So there's hope?

NO! WMMR is Philly's Rock station. 104.5 is a Philly rock station. WMGK is Classic Rock.

Those are your choices. Choose.

YSP will NEVER come back.

Ummm, that was a joke!? I choose to lighten up a little, Captain Charisma.

i wonder if WIP would snatch mikey miss and tony bruno from 97.5 if they did it would be a wrap for the fanatic

They can try. I doubt either would want to go over there at this point.

While I don't share the opinion of the OP that WIP will fail, I wonder if WIP picked the wrong year to make the switch. A month in and the Phillies are done early, looks like the eagles are too, and who knows when there will be an NBA season, or if.

Since they have the eagles broadcast, thier ratings will probably stay higher this winter, compared to last year anyway, but I wouldn't be suprised with soon basically only the flyers to talk about if their daytime talk ratings are down from last year when they were on AM. Maybe not this month's ratings, but November if the eagles don't turn it around. This could also be really bad news for 97.5. It was one thing going up against an FM WIP when you had the prospects ofa Phillies WS, and Eagles dream team to atleast keep the masses tuned into the format, but with again only flyers, and competing with WIP it might be too much for WPEN.

BTW, Missanelli was fired last time for punching someone at WIP. So I doubt he would be brought back.

Always a gamble when you take the plunge. It was a calculated one...few could have seen that kind of choke by the Phils or such a bad Eagles start. But hey, maybe it will help in the long run, as the anger builds and feeds more venting than a blissful, contented audience.

Even if they did have a working crystal ball, though, why continue dragging out WYSP, going nowhere? If the time had come to move on, another year languishing wouldn't help the bottom line.

i'm sure they'll be able to justify their numbers one way or another, but i agree with the OP, i am continually disappointed at the refusal to bring any new blood into WIP's regular lineup. yes i know philadelphia is supposedly stubborn when it comes to change, but WIP takes it to a whole new level. michael barkann does not count...anyone who watches philly sports knows who he is. literally the only new voice to crack the regular WIP lineup other than ex-jocks in the last 10 years has been rob ellis, and he like barkann has a CSN connection. macnow and gargano aren't meant for PM drive in my opinion...i like a serious show in PM drive. too many fake laughs from the cuz and movie and guy talk from macnow. any serious sports analysis is avoided like the plague...they think it will "geek" listeners out. it's just so frustrating for someone who wants to hear intelligent sports talk in the market...i'm not a big missanelli fan either but at least he generally keeps the goofing off to a minimum. i have a feeling he's going to survive just fine against this new "competition".

Duh Cuz is unlistenable. He breaks into laughter every sentence. A South Philly stooge and the most unprofessional personality on the station and that is saying a mouthful.

I have noticed cataldi has also begun an extremely irritating habit of laughing at non-funny conversation. I guess CBS has told their hosts that if they laugh at themselves that may give the listeners a false sense of entertainment. John DeBella has made a career out of that.

Does anyone have the direct ratings?

Barkan/Reese vs Tony Bruno

Duh Cuz/Macnow vs Missanelli

I'd actually like Philly sports broadcasters more if they actually talk about *ALL* sports in Philly. That includes a certain soccer/football team called the Philadelphia Union. So far, coverage on them is next to nil and that's a darn shame IMHO.

Anyone know how much WIP talked about the Soul the year they won the Arena Football League championship?

And if they did bring him back, given CBS' penchant of teaming a sports talker with a former athlete, they should team him with, say, Latrell Sprewell. ::)

Sure. About as popular as the WNBA. It's programming suicide to talk about soccer.

Yes, but unlike the major NFL team in this metro area, they actually are aiming for some of hopeful payoff as they enter their preseason. That's more than can be said of the even the Phillies again failing to reach the World Series this year.

Heck, track and field is also a reputable sporting activity, but nobody ever talks about the Penn Relays at any great length either. If you want to be a sports talk broadcaster, then talk about sports and not be selective about it.

It doesn't matter whether the Union is on top of the world or not. Death is death on the radio. "Sports" is the less important of the two words in "sports broadcaster." It's the adjective, not the noun. And as a broadcaster, as a business, their job is not to appeal to the minute sliver of the world that cares about pro soccer or pro ping-pong, it's precisely to be selective and talk about what the plurality of their target audience cares to hear about.

Talking soccer, womens sports, track on a Sports Talk station is like a music station playing bad records. Sports Talk needs to play the hits and in this town the hits are the Eagles in heavy rotation, Phillies and Flyers in medium, and Sixers and local colleges in light.

Is a business supposed to be run for profit? If so, it shoule be doing what is profitable.

So, basically...

If you don't care, it's on the air.

The intelligence quotient is really skewing downwards, methinks... :-/

How difficult is it to understand that like a music station that plays hit records, a sports talk station would talk about the most important topics to the MAJORITY of its listeners.

Kind of like the olympics---Why do you suppose we get nights of nothing but figure skating, skiing, and the extreme sports these days and not much hockey in prime time? Because the Olympics target women---and through research they know what events drive viewership.

Same for a sports talk station...WIP and the Fanatic both know its Eagles are priority 1.

Dude we get you have a soccer agenda but you have to use common sense. Soccer is #6 on the list of priorities (if it's even on the list) of the average sports fan in this town. As much as I hate to say it being a big baseball fan, the Eagles are still #1 and then right behind them it's the Phillies. Flyers are 3rd, Sixers and the Big 5 basketball school fight it out for 4 and 5 and then maybe the Union if that person is a soccer fan. You have to cater to what your audience is into. Not be ESPN and try to program the likes and dislikes of your audience. That's why that network gets so much flack.
