94HJY's HD

What is the deal with WHJY and HD? The station has excellent analog audio but no longer broadcasts in HD. They ran HD for a decade with Alternative on the HD 2. They still ID as WHJY and WHJY HD1. Their WSNE and WWBB are still in HD. What gives? We would sure appreciate the 94HJY Big Banger in HD 1 again! Also, we sure could use an Alternative on their HD 2!
Thanks for any info!

How long has the HD been off? Many stations do not have auxiliary transmitters with HD, and few have HD at separate auxiliary sites.

Running on either kind of backup do to issues with the main transmitter or site could explain the HD being off. And if the station's antenna is on a TV tower, the repack may have affected it.

Last I knew, WHJY shared a transmitter with 95.5 WLVO (formerly WBRU) from the tower next to the old WHJY/WHJJ building in East Providence. HJY was running HD for a long time from the 00s to a few years ago. Maybe it was an issue with the combined transmitter?

The HD has been off for a good 3 years or more. 94.1 has been on 1110's main tower since it came on the air in 1966. 95.5 began diplexing into 94.1's antenna maybe 40 or more years ago. They have co-existed on the same stick with no problems since that time. 94.1 has operated with 50,000 watts ERP in stereo since its inception. 95.5 began diplexing with 94.1 after their 50,000 watt boondoggle with antenna atop the Sci-Li wreaked havoc on various experiments at Brown University. 95.5 broadcast with 18,500 watts ERP in stereo since their diplex. 94.1 also ran HD steady for a decade and 95.5 never broadcast in HD. They installed an auxiliary antenna for 101.5 a little more than half way up the tower around 4 or 5 years ago. After a short period of time they raised the 101.5 aux antenna to roughly 2/3 the height of the tower. I believe that this is when they started toying with 94.1's HD signal. As an interesting side note: They lowered the signal level of the 94.1 HD to the point that the HD would cut in and out even in 90+dBu areas within sight of their tower. As you'd drive the signal, you would hear 94.1 go in and out of HD. They had it adjusted perfectly! Timing between analog and HD was perfect. AF response between analog and HD was perfect (I can't think of a better word to describe their adjustments!). The only difference in sound was the dynamic range. There is no possible way for an analog signal to have that kind of dynamic range! I figured that it had been shut down for an HD upgrade. I figured wrong, 94.1 is in analog only since then.

Meanwhile, 95.5 built a 50,000 watt ERP auxiliary atop the tower that 92.3 has occupied forever. TV channel 36 replaced the channel 12 antenna when 12 moved to nearby MA many years ago. 95.5 replaced the channel 36 antenna sometime after 36 also moved to nearby MA with the DTV switch over. 95.5 no longer exists on my radios so I have no idea how its "letterhead", highly directional signal drives nowadays. I can definitely say that 95.5's 18,500 watt ERP signal served this area with an excellent signal for all of the years that I was a P1 listener.

While I'm on the subject, FWIW, 101.5 was on the channel 12 (92.3, channel 36) tower until they moved to the TV farm in nearby MA. After Iheart blew up the 101.5 and 101.9 signals, 101.5 now switches into HD about the time you enter Warwick from East Greenwich (pronounced Grenitch) on route 95. 101.5 now broadcasts as a Class A from the top of a building in downtown Providence. If they ever come to their senses, the 95.5 aux site would be the ideal place to locate 101.5

95.5's aux was not built on the tower that 92.3 occupies. It is (was?) on the Industrial Communications tower on Peck Hill, west of 295.

Thank you for the site correction! A few years back 95.5 had planned a move to Neutaconkanut Hill once the channel 36 analog antenna was removed. That CP was obviously deleted. When 95.5 re-applied for the CP again, I assumed there were no changes. I was wrong! It's been awhile since I've been up that way and didn't even know that tower existed. I much appreciate the proper info!

Also the current CP for the 95.5 back up states 26kW with a 209 meter HAAT.
