95.1 Latino Mix flips to Amor 95.1

This should be interesting. Apart from the big dog of KROM, Spanish formats have been a hard sell for San Antonio given that the city is mainly English-dominant Hispanic, not Spanish-dominant.

This move now gives 104.5 Latino Hits a wide open canvas as the premier 18-34 Latino choice (it was the better progarmmed IMO). The early 2000’s iterations of UVN’s Amor were Adult 25-54 or even 35+…. Preciosa 105.7 was pretty much the Amor format already. And yes, another tough format for the local sales crews. Perhaps 95.1 could have tackled another format…

The earlier 2000's HBC / Univision format was "Recuerdo" and not "Amor". And it targeted 35-54 through extensive music research done at least 4 times a year across multiple markets.

Preciosa was an un-researched copy of Recuerdo. The Recuerdo format was created at HBC, and there was no comparable format in the US or Mexico at all similar.

For more than a decade, the format got excellent results and sales.

Yes I remember Recuerdo well- why wouldnt 95.1 take on that classics format with the success of Norteno?! Perhaps the current PPM panel had a big Spanish recruiting push?

Amor is already fighting for such a small piece of the San Antonio Spanish dominant pie. CHI, LA, Houston are great fits but not SA.

I think Amor was around in the early 2000s, not Recuerdo which came in the late 2000s IMO.

Recuerdo came first on 95.1 in September 2000. It was very upper demographic (although it seemed to do ok ratings wise). It later shifted to a younger demographic (“La Kalle” I think it was called) and featured a lot of Reggaeton. A more contemporary “Recuerdo” was launched around 2006; I remember hearing “Oye Como Va” on 95.1. I’m not sure how long that lasted or if there was something in between Recuerdo and the format alteration and call letter flip from KCOR-FM to KGSX.

95X was the in-between format (I was a talent on that and La Kalle at one point). Just sampled 95.1 and it's a blend of Alejandro, Juanes, Juan Gabriel, etc. Anyway you slice this pie, 104.5 is primed for the 1st/2nd generation Latino/Hispanic/English dominant listener (Bad Bunny concert) and 95.1 is trending higher income, Mexican-born/raised: let's see if there's a few meters in the panel for their sake... For sales: this type of format was always third down on the cluster bill (side chick or compliment to KBBT/KROM).

No, it did not. "Recuerdo" was created in LA in early 2000, and it was not until about 2 years later that it was put on nationally in Chicago, Dallas, San Antonio, Austin, McAllen, Phoenix, San Diego, Fresno, Las Vegas and San Francisco.

It's research target was 30-49, and that was the group it performed best in.

You have all the years mixed up.

Amalia González, the PD, and I created the format based on one of the deepest format searches I've ever been part of (headed by researcher Owen Leach, the co-creator of "smooth jazz" with Frank Cody) so I have quite a bit of background in the format and its national launch.

It might have not have been called Recuerdo when it changed over from The Ranch in September 2000, but I remember a playlist that targeted an older demographic than I was at the time (35). The younger sounding version where I heard Oye Como Va was definitely 2006.

Recuerdo was a 100% simulcast network out of LA.

So if I may bounce this scenario: with 95.1 now flipped and giving 104.5 Latino Hits open range as the only, true Spanish CHR in town, this creates the perfect space for 105.7 KXQT-HD3 to aim directly at (say it with me) KONO or KISS. Do the iHeart Programming brass have enough in the tank to pull this off? Preciosa pulls very respectable numbers for being a Class D sitting on Tower of the Americas and for being "all over the map" with their programming. This creates a great area to take a Rhythmic AC/aggressive Classic Hits approach and shave off KONO. This would totally allow Q101-9 to remain #1 after they flip back from Holiday music. OR fire up some Alternative and pick away at KISS. I know Preciosa was a great sales bundle coupled with 104.5 but imagine selling the only Alternative in town or bundling a Rhythmic AC with Q1019/96.1 NOW... Thoughts?

God I would love to see a full powered Alt Rock format in San Antonio before I die…

There is Amor in Miami, and that name's expansion into Dallas, Vegas and probably other places. SBS parked the name on WPAT so Univision didn't get any ideas about using it in New York.
For 40-some years KLVE in LA has been "Kay-Love, Radio Amor".

Univision never intended to do a softer AC format in NYC. They started out, mistakenly, doing all salsa, then move... too early... into reggaetón and then have spent about 20 years with different variants of what we'd have to call the Spanish language equ8ivalent of Hot AC or Adult CHR.
