95.3 Hamilton

No more Country music on 95.3

They are now a "Greatest hits" station, effective at 3pm today.

Anyone in London area care to comment on this?
I believe the station sounds a lot like the Hawk now. (103.9FM)

I wonder if anyone with lower ratings will go country...?

What I find hard to believe is that Corus would do this when there is no other country station in the market, and Hamilton already gets classic rock and classic hits from Q107 and 103.9 Woodstock. Of course, if you're in Kitchener or Toronto there are other options for country, but both signals in those areas are small and don't reach the rural population that listens to country.

I guess Buffalo's WYRK will be picking up some (more) Ontario listeners.
Not that WYRK doesn't already have enough ;) Nice to have them, but listeners north of the river don't count in Arbitron, just as listeners south of the river don't count in the BBM.

Yeah, but 'YRK accepts Canadian dollars. In fact, I'd be surprised if they didn't take Canadian dollars at par.

I hate to say this, but it could be that Wave 94.7 is not doing as well with their Smooth Jazz format as Country 95.3 was doing, and they may be more successful running on the KX96 Country playlist. (KX96 Ajax/Oshawa and Wave 94.7 Hamilton are both owned and operated by Durham radio inc)

It would be sad to see Smooth Jazz vanish, but I'm guessing Country will do better for them.

You aren't the first to suggest the possibility. Now, I've never heard 94.7, nor have I heard 91.1 from Toronto which apparently is a jazz station. How much overlap is there between those two stations in musical selection?

Jazz FM is listener supported, and therefore more free to fiddle around and experiment with the very idea of what Jazz music is, while Wave 94.7 is strictly formatted to be a (contemporary?) smooth jazz station very similar to many (vanishing) Smooth Jazz stations throughout the United States.

Unlike Jazz FM, Wave 94.7 must have ad revenue to pay rent and bills.
I'm under the impression that the Country format would bring in better revenue, but that's just my opinion.
(based on the lower ratings of Wave, vs. ratings Country 95.3 maintained)
