95.3 in Tijuana Now Playing Classic Hits

Radio3787 said:
When is Tijuana/San Diego going to get a Radio H20? I think 106.5 would be perfect as te ratings keep declining with every book.

106.5 has more than twice the 18-49 that the next closest Spanish language station has, and tends to be in the top 5 or 6 total market stations in its target demo. Since there have been revisions to the Spanish dominant percentages, changes in geographic proportionality (GeoZones), changes in recruiting (Address Based and CPO households) in the last year, different formats will have slightly adjusted maintenance levels in the future.

Remember, 18-49 is the key sales demo for Spanish language, not 6+ or 12+ or even 25-54. That's why the leading source of revenue data for radio shows 106.5 as the #2 overall biller in the market for last year.

Also keep in mind that programming designed for San Diego has limited appeal in Tijuana and vice versa. That's why several Tijuana operators have tried the same format on two frequencies with one focused to the South and another focused on San Diego.

I like this station and don't care what language they speak. I have no problem with the signal at all it comes in nice and clear. Right now they are playing Bonnie & Clyde.

Enjoy it or even record it while it lasts. Note that, although the stream is labeled "Milenio" it does not ID as Milenio, just FM 95.3, and the programming is not that which is carried on all the other Milenio stations (The Monterrey station still has some music segments, but they have promos about a TV news talent soon coming to on of those segments).

Either they are having issues linking up with the mothership in Monterrey, or they are cleansing the frequency of its lower socioeconomic image, so the music part is unlikely to last long, except, perhaps, in between news and talk segments.

Most experience has this signal not performing too well north of downtown SD. Where are you hearing it?

Re: What to expect from 95.3 in Tijuana

Here is what Jaime Barrera, one of the executives of Milenio (newspaper, radio and tv) has to say about the build-out of Milenio. This is part of a longer, more detailed explanation I got:

Or, "Milenio radio will come to reinforce the multimedia strategy of the (newspaper) group, which also includes Milenio television. Every day, besides the morning newscast from 6 to 9, there will be an aftermoon one from 1 PM to 3 PM and another from 7 to 8 PM with a sportscast from 6 (to 7) PM. At night, the station will simulcast the audio of Milenio Television, and, for the moment, the other times will be filled with music from the 70's, 80's and 90's."

Further, I'm informed that each market which has a separate edition of the Milenio newspaper will also have some local talk and news shows.

This project began in the first week of May with the conversion of the 35-year-old "FM Tu" (You FM), XHFMTU, 103.7 in Monterrey, from music to Milenio. The conversion has been done step by step, and is not yet complete as they are in only the 10th week of operation with the new format which is a mix of content from the newspaper group, the TV cable news network and radio-only commentators and newscasters.

While I did not get any answers on when the Tijuana project will be built out, this gives a sense of how the project unfolds. I specifically wanted to know if this Tijuana move meant that a new edition of the Milenio newspaper will be started in Tijuana, but have not gotten a yes or no to that question... making me suspect that there is a shroud of secrecy to some aspects of the national rollout of Milenio in both print and radio.

At the moment, all the Milenio radio stations are owned by Multimedios, but it would seem likely that they would seek affiliates, at least to cover the top 20 markets, once the whole day of news and commentary is built out.

I'm enjoying it while I can for any surprises that come. The other day, it played Je T'Aime, Moi Non Plus by Jane Birkin and Serge Gainsbourg and Polka Dot Bikini by Brian Hyland, two novelty songs that Dr. Demento played several times on his show.

XHHIT signal is similar to KSIQ, in that 95.3 starts fading out going into north county.

Actually, the signal coverage is similar to The Walrus or XLNC1-- but XHHIT's running at lower power than those stations. XHHIT's transmitter is on the same mountain south of Tijuana as those stations. KSIQ's booster is on Mt. Miguel. But you're correct in that all of those stations have poor North County coverage.

Interestingly, the generic liners on 95.3 say "fifty thousand watts." The usable signal for in-home and at work reception seems to fall short of Mission Valley. Obviously, with the format planned for this station, they won't care about US coverage at all.

50kw is what the power would be @100meters or so in height above average terrain. At 957m, the ERP is 12kw, but the pattern is
pulled in to protect San Diego, Carlsbad, Indian Wells, and Yuma.

A directional FM in Mexico is technically related to the famous Mexican one-tower directional AM operations (File under: "Bonilla")

It's a C1 Class station with 12 KW ERP and it will became Milenio Radio, a new news/music format

Are they talking about a future format? Or about their oldies music? I can't understand what they are saying except for the call letter and the frequency.

95.3 makes it to Del Mar with a clean signal. Same in Carmel Valley

They are not talking about anything except "95.3."

They say nothing about the music.

The corporate website identifies the station as one of the Milenio net stations, but they do not have any Milenio imaging or programs. Obviously, they are not yet ready to put the network on in Tijuana.

And we have a form of confirmation of that from "bilofranco" a couple of posts ago...

I receive 95.3 in Mira Mesa on a plain old boom box. Listened to it in the car all the way to work in the SDSU araea and it came in fine. I know the Milenio owners don't care what I think because I'm not their target, but my wife and I really enjoyed the music on the way to work. Every San Diego station spends all morning blabbering about nothing. it was nice to hear just pure music with a few commercials mixed in. it's too bad this format, filler though it may be, won't last.

As a company, we do care. Please send any suggestions to [email protected]

Im sure that the owners of that station dont give a darn about my opinion, but it is refreshing and enjoyable!! I listen in the car all the time! Although I can pick out about 40% of what they are saying the music is fantasitc! It makes KyXy and the Walrus sound REALLY bad!

Perhaps poster Bilofranco can let us know when the Milenio talk format will finally arrive in Tijuana; it's pretty obvious that the music format is not going to get them the national billing or the ratings they expect from the Milenio brand.
