95-3 The Eagle: 80's Classic Hits

Anybody else notice the positioner change? I hnoticed it during their 80's weekend. Personally, I've always loved their imaging and the fact that Cox does try to keep the format going... their ratings have suffered, but again that's 12+... what's your take on the new positioner?

I hope that you are kidding. That has to be the most bland, unimaginative, predictable Classic Hits station that I have heard, to date. It's also "cookie cutter"... it sounds exactly like the Cox station in Atlanta, with the same terrible voice / image guy.

It's basically The Point all over again if you ask me. I liked The Point's imaging better than the current guy on The Eagle.

For everyone else:

Stereolane: Sorry, you're not paying attention. We haven't had that voice guy on the air in two years. And the two stations are not cookie cutter...go to Mediabase (if you can) and check it out, we are vastly different.

And, sorry Alan: It's not exactly the Point all over again. If was, you'd be hearing Safety Dance, Dexy's Midnight Runners, Madonna, Cyndi Lauper, etc. The new Eagle plays none of these. And yes, for the record, the music decisions were made here...in Dayton exclusively. The playlist compares favorably with the Brew in Columbus, with just a few regional differences and a slightly different lean.

The ratings? Well for crying out loud, we flipped May 27th...how can you judge those numbers as a reflection of our new format and positioning? Give it 6 months. At the same time, though, remember, this is an A/C format. It's in that lane. And, with Mix, Fly, Click and God knows how many others, to say the very least it's a very crowded lane, especially for a signal-challenged Class A with a tower half-way to Wilmington.

I hadn't even realized that The Eagle had transitioned into an 80s Classic Hits format. When I flipped past the other day I heard OMD's "If You Leave" and had to make sure I was on 95.3 and not 107.7 lol. Anyhow, why the switch to 80s? You're right, the A/C format is crowded in Dayton. This might not be a bad position for 95.3 to take. WBWR/The Brew 105.7 in Columbus does well...and they're in a PPM market. 95.3 should do well...but as Jason said above, it is a VERY crowded A/C market in Dayton.

Alan:

Well, I'd have to say you've answered your own question. The Brew in Columbus is a successful station. Even though we're not a song for song clone of the Brew, the two stations are very close. And there's basically nothing like it in Dayton. We don't necessarily expect the exact same numbers with what we're doing (we're more of a rimshot and, as I said the A/C lane is pretty crowded here), but after a careful examination of what was available format wise, this is about the only unique demo format available.

I respect The Eagle... what's the chance of them flipping the format? I honestly could see a new CHR or aggressive Urban doing well here. A lot of people are tired of both Hot 1029 and Channel 999 and while Click is a great station, not agressive enough for the 18-34 demo.

Cox isn't going to flip The Eagle to CHR. Period. It would be foolish to put CHR on a rimshot signal like 95.3 to start with. CHR was on 95.3 with DJ 95/Power 95, but that was eons ago...and back then, the market was a lot different, not to mention that Mom-and-Pop stations were the order of the day. I just couldn't see Cox putting a ton of money into a rimshot signal like 95.3 to battle the flamethrower 99.9 and 102.9 signals. That'd be like bringing a Super Soaker to a gunfight.

Remember,It's highly unlikely that listeners to a Cox station in Atlanta are listening to a Cox station in Dayton or any other
market for that matter. (unless you're a radio geek).....get a life

No respect is absolutely right...thank you.

And for the record: The River in Atlanta is a 70's based station, while Eagle/Dayton is 80's based.

No way they can be "cookie cutter". Each station is tailored for its' individual markets.

Jammin' - I do respect your enthusiasm. But, in a general sense, even though you may think that "a lot of people are tired" of those stations, their ratings don't show that. It's a little too early to look at Channel's numbers, but they've got the signal to do well...time will tell what happens there. As for Hot 102-9, I believe they were #2 overall this time. That doesn't sound to me like "a lot of people are tired" of the station. It would be difficult, if not impossible for any Class A rimshot to take on these two stations. And I don't think any owner in their right mind, if they only had a rimshot would spend the money needed on such a station because they know it would be highly unlikely they'd get the return they'd need for the expense.
