95-3 The Eagle Teasing Again

Hi, guys!

Just a couple of thoughts to mention here. But, I want to start by saying the opinions expressed are mine and mine alone...and are not necessarily the opinions of the station, its management or Cox hirearchy.

For starters, the Eagle never...ever...in the past week mentioned or even whispered the words "format change". Yes, some of the verbage used might have made a few "wishful thinkers" allow their imaginations to fly, but a format change was never suggested.

As to the one 8 minute stop set...I used to seriously believe in limiting stop set lengths and unit count. I've read the old published studies. Today, I'm not so sure. Why? Stations in Dayton over the past few years have already aired 8 minute long stop sets! In fact, some of them have aired 8 minute stop sets twice an hour, with a third (shorter) stop set as well? At that time, it didn't seem to affect their ratings...

We'll all just have to wait and see...

I believe keeping The Eagle if the Eagle is working... if this was any other market, it would've been gone! Cox doesn't have a problem flipping any of their bigger stations.

I'm surprised more advertisers aren't questioning the idea of being buried in minute 5 of 8 minutes and how effective that really is. It may not have as much effect since stations are running their sets at about the same time. I remember working at a station that deliberately pre-stopped everyone else in town so we'd hit spots just before they stopped down so by the time they stopped, we were back into music. Go back in time and check either 20-20 news or News 5 Minutes Sooner.

Just a few years ago I was airchecking WTUE for my sales staff and they ran a stop set in morning drive with 15 frickin' units! 60's, 30's 10's all jammed together. Listening to THAT was like having a root canal without anesthesia! And back in the early 80's when WING was running 18 minutes an hour I hit an hour with 36 30-second spots in it. Now that's CLUTTER! It will be interesting to hear how many of The Eagle's spot sets actually have 8 minutes of commercials. I'm guessing some during the day, but at night not so many. Anyone remember the story of Randy Michaels (I think) being so upset by the number of spots he had in an hour that he ran them all back-to-back then finished out the hour with just back to back tunes? Management was NOT happy....

Cox ran 52 Min.s of "classic rock" on their 97.1 The River in Atlanta for several years. IIRC they often had 2 set of commercials at about 35 and 50. Now their slogan is 50 min.s of non stop. Yes it is a BIG set. They have slipped a little lately in the 6+ PPM beauty show. I do not have access any of the money demo's so I am not sure of any $$ change.
