Where did this station come from? I just heard it for the first time today and only because someone posted the frequency here. Says the station is in Southhaven. had good reception until i headed west and got to the 40/240 split. is it a mom and pop?
 
It's worse than a Mom and Pop. Owned by group out of Dallas that churns and burns stations. First Broadcasting, possiblly the worst broadcast company in existence. Oops that trophy goes to Clear Channel. Overpaid for the station and can't unload it.

While Clear Channel isn't my favorite company by any stretch of the imagination, I wouldn't call them the worst broadcast company in existence either. I would say First is far worse, though I will give them credit for being basically honest and upfront about what they do. They have very little interest in holding onto any of their stations, but they don't lie about it.
 
I am not going to comment on the current ownership of 95.3, because I really don't know them. BUT...

The larger problem of 95.3 is bigger than one owner. The graveyard is littered with headstones of broadcasters who fail to understand that 95.3 is not now, nor ever will be, a Memphis radio station.

WVIM is a Class A with a transmitter near Hernando. It delivers a useable signal to most of DeSoto County, but covers little of Shelby County. There is <a href="http://www.radio-info.com/smf/index.php/archive/money">money</a> to be made in DeSoto County, one of the fastest growing in America, but that fact seems to slip by management. Still today, WVIM is tagged as :

"Memphis Greatest Hits."

It just seems basic. Hey, maybe it's just me.

exactly when i was there the previous station manager was trying to be a Memphis station and with out any disagreement from the owner I helped in directing the station more at Desoto, Tate, & Tunica Counties....
we still did things like Memphis Traffic Reports and got lots of calls for requests from Memphis when Kix had games on....

at one time 95.3 was background music on one of the cable channels even which helped also

Desoto county has a considerable population not focused on by any station really
 
Something I've wondered is why couldn't someone buy WVIM and 95.3 in Brownsville and make some technical changes to make the two of them cover most of the Memphis area with the same programming, like K-LOVE has done with 94.9 in Byhalia and Ripley, TN.

Because they have to offer second-adjacent protection to 95.7. That alone means the central part of Memphis will not be covered by 95.3 no matter what it does.
 
I know EMF approached Mr Lane & Mr Rider years ago but at that time they would not agree to sell the station.

I was told they refused to sell it to several groups over the years.

My last dealings with them was years ago. I was sort of in the middle of an old messy battle but Mr. Lane always treated me very nicely.

He even changed out the tower lights a couple times. No way I was going up past about 100 feet which i did a couple times.

I still wonder what First will do with VIM in the end... I have seen them do some complex deals and moves.. VIM is a much more complicated case though
 
95.3 had been a Mexican channel for a while. I remember back in the day, it was a country station back in the late 80's or early 90's. They played our local high school football games on there air. One time they had our band play in the studio.

One time they had some wacky DJ who said on the air that he was going to jump of the Hernando DeSoto bridge into the Mississippi. People took him very seriously, but he never said if he was joking or not. He was fired soon after.

I grew up down the street from the transmitter. I ran my truck off the road near there one time and got stuck.

I listened to WVIM at times when I was in Memphis. I can see the need for having the Spanish language Christian programming, but I always thought that it should have been on its own station. I really think that the people that the Spanish programming reached lost more than the CCM listeners did when WVIM changed formats, because K-LOVE is still on in Memphis, but is anybody else in the area doing Spanish language Christian programming now? I can see where there is a need for that which probably isn't being filled any more.

Michael mentioned earlier that EMF had offered to buy WVIM. Sometimes I wish they had, so that they could have brought Air 1 into the area, especially if they could have combined it with 95.3 in Brownsville somehow. (I know the reasons why that probably won't happen were explained by Kent earlier.)

Definitely sounds like RJ! Dog used to tell stories...my fave: (FM100 days) Ron would be late, run in the studio and tell John to go move his car...he left it parked - running - in the middle of Union Ave! ;D

Yeah, I think that was Ron Jordan who said he was going to jump off the bridge. He had a sidekick named Mrs. Vicki.
 
Dan Lenzini once worked there for Eddie. I wish he were still around. No doubt he'd have a memorable take on the state of the business.
 
If I'm not mistaken (could go either way nowadays), Chris Parnell did some DJ time there, years before SNL...
 
I was ops manager and did mornings there during the Ron's time at VIM.
I don't remember a bridge comment but he did say lots of wacky stuff.

and its was Mizzrez Vicky as he called her

also was privedged to work with and know Charles Bolton who was known for "The Dixieland Jamboree" in Booneville & Corinth

Eddie is retired to Bolivar Tn now and is doing a live show in Middleton.
He was also doing a show on WMOD on Thursday nights. I'm not sure if he is still doing it.

Chis Parnell did work at VIM at one time... Jack Parnell was still the voice of V-95 when i was there in the early 90s.
