95.5 one step closer towards metro upgrade

The FCC just approved a change in the table of allotments which should clear the way for 95.5 The Beat to improve metro coverage. The city of licence for 104.1 KISS 104.1 FM will soon be changing to Greenville (GA) with no facility change while current Greenville licensed 95.7 WIOL will improve Columbus market coverage with a downgrade in class and city of license change to Waverly Hall. INfinity (now CBS Radio) tried to make Cox and Radio One disclose any agreements they made because they realize Cox was working on moving 95.5 closer to town.
This move was all part of a set of moves already put into place that will allow Cox to move 95.5 closer to Atlanta. Cox's Birmingham market 95.7 has a construction permit to downgrade from a C1 to a C2 but will actually serve Birmingham better. A 95.5 in east central Alabama moved to allow that move as well in a move that will also help out WBTS. Of course the biggest move was changing the WBTS city of license to Doraville. There is a grandfathered in short-spacing that allows 95.5 to get close to 94.9 and 96.1 but the eastern Alabama 95.5 and Greenville GA 95.7 are in the way but actions have been taken to eliminate those issues.

Cox has 90 days to file an application to change WALR-FM to Greenville-Atlanta and Radio One has 90 days to file an application to change WIOL to Waverly Hall-Columbus to become a class A station. I would say that once these applications are granted that we should expect to see a minor change to licensed facility application for WBTS to soon appear.

In the past year we have seen upgrades to 100.5 and signal improvements to 104.7 and 106.7fm take place. Signal changes are still in the works for 92.5 93.3 and 107.1fm that should impact Atlanta in the coming year.

I believe that 2 class A stations in Rome area are in the way, WSRM 95.3 Coosa and WATG 95.7 Trion. Southern Broadcasting just put 95.3 on the air, so I guess they (and the owners of WATG) are going to be more than thrilled about this.
(I don't know if class A stations are protected like class C's. If not, these two will be put off of the air.)

If WBTS downgrades to a C2 to broadcast from the WSB-FM tower it will fit with WSRM but is still about 12km short-spaced to WATG. I am sure more is to come on this in the coming months.

Rick,

When did Radio One aquire 95.7 in Greenville? It used to be owned by Davis Broadcasting....FCC site still shows him as the owner. I didn't think Radio One had any stations in Columbus.

I think it matters what source you're looking at. Some internet sources list DBI stations as Radio One.

I seem to remember hearing Radio One bought most of Davis Broadcasting a few years ago, though Davis still has some stations. You may want to check the ownership reports for 95.7 in Greenville to see if it's Radio One or Davis. Radio One may have kept the Davis Broadcasting name as the licensee for some of its acquisitions (like Citicasters still exists for Clear Channel).

Can I, as an Athens resident, file a complaint about the loss of local service? The COL change stresses that the coverage would not be altered in any way.

Greg Davis sold his Augusta cluster to Radio One but still owns Columbus. The station at 95.7 used to be WKZJ with an urban AC format, but Davis picked up 92.7, which has a better Columbus signal, and moved WKZJ there. I'm guessing he still owns 95.7, but Radio One definitely does not own it.

Re: mistake

>>>but Radio One definitely does not own it.

I reviewed the document and discovered that it says Davis plan as day. It is too late to correct my initial post on the subject.

Honestly, and don't jump on me--But the BEAT is as abysmal as 97.1.
