95.5 Processing

IMHO, the processing on 95.5 WSB (WSBB) is outstanding. I don't recall a spoken word station with a better sound (though I haven't heard the on-air signals of the other CMG News & Talk stations).

I think the processing of all the Atlanta CMG stations is excellent, with each station's sound tailored to its format.

iHeart and Audacy stations also have really good processing.

Is WSBB still running with the stereo off? Unless you're doing PxP miked for stereo (the old Braves games in stereo were great), there's no reason for spoken word in stereo.

I don't know the WSBB exact audio chain configuration, but most of the audio processing "boxes" are basically a "computer" that handles the AGC and compression and can handle the stereo function too. If you read the instructions on some units you can find "presets" that come with the unit. Some of these are surprisingly good unless your in a "loudness" war. Different people have "tastes" so this isn't exact If you are doing your own thing, I would advise making a copy of the settings before you do any changes.

One would assume they are using a microwave studio transmitter link (IMHO the best). There are stations that use a form of "tunneling protocol" internet for their STL. In some rural areas, the internet at times gets busy to the point that the station sounds bad.

Listen to WSBB here in a month on Christmas Eve when they play Christmas music. The processing is very good on WSBB. I would say the all of the CMG stations here in Atlanta have the best processing. Stereo pilot is still on at WSBB.

Does the stereo carrier and or HD make it more likely to stop at that station on the "scan" function?

Do out of market PPM units report different market stations to that local market. One would think the NYC / Nassau - Suffork would have commuters that spend time in both markets. If someone from Chicago spend a week in Atlanta would the Atlanta listening count in Atlanta?

Charles Kinney I’m pretty sure set all of CMG Atlanta’s stations. They all sound outstanding. When we visited Atlanta last summer, Charles gave us a tour of WSB-AM and the WSB radio/tv (CMG) studios. He is truly a very nice guy, and so is everyone else at CMG Atlanta. Anyways, I asked what they used for processing on each station, and he told me, but because processing is one of those things you really don’t tell others especially in major market, I’m not going to say here. All I will say here is that 95.5 uses an Omnia.

If someone from Chicago spend a week in Atlanta would the Atlanta listening count in Atlanta?
When someone participating in a ratings survey listens to a station from a different market, the station receives credit in the market where the panelist lives and not in its home market. So if a panelist from Chicago listens to an Atlanta station, the Atlanta station receives credit in Chicago, not Atlanta.

I think this is more dependent on the tuner. I could have two different model tuners in the same spot and they’d scan the FM dial differently. Part of this I feel is the firmware being used in the tuner, how sensitive the tuner is at picking up stations, and how good the tuner is at filtering out interference. I used to have a drawer full of digital tuner PLL portable radios (multiple brands) and they’d all seek differently (and receive differently). Also, those old pocket radios are nowhere near as reenforced as a car radio tuner. The static was horrible on those little radios and the tuner would almost always pick this static up thinking it was a live station. Typically you could only receive Class C FMs on those little tuners. The smaller stations in town would get swallowed up by interference. Also, the higher you would extend the antenna, the worse the static would be. Doesn’t happen on a car radio. Having HD on a tuner gives you the bonus of being able to seek both analog stereo and digital HD, so I am certain the seek is better here.
