95.5FM Move to Atlanta Market Turns 20

Was thinking today that September 24 marks the 20th anniversary of the big move of 95.5FM from the Athens market over to the Atlanta market. I seem to recall reading in the AJC back in 1999 that the original transmitter was at GA-81 and GA-316 in Winder at 100,000kW where the large bridge is now being constructed. Then at some point it moved to the Chateau Elan tower at the lower 40kW power. I remember how exciting it was to get 95-5 the Beat. It was such a fresh sounding top 40 station. We went so long in the 1990s without a true top 40 station in the Atlanta area and then we had a real top 40 station. 10,000 songs in a row commercial free for the first couple of months with general manager Lorie Sheridan giving commentary between songs. First as WNGC then WYAP for a few weeks (I remember Lorie saying that we’ve got to change these call letters cause they made no sense and were randomly generated by the FCC) then WBTS for 11 years until after the move of WSB to 95.5FM in October 2010. I am sure the move of WSB to FM was the best decision but I sure do miss those first couple of years with 95-5 the Beat. Great memories. The last two CHR songs I remember in rotation before going to Rhythmic CHR in 2001 was Stronger by Britney Spears and If You’re Gone by Matchbox 20. The rest of the playlist was completely rhythmic except for these two CHR songs. These two songs eventually got squeezed out in spring 2001 and it was all rhythmic. Here’s my list of the songs in the first 10,000 songs in a row rotation. I only recall these because they played them over and over again for about a month.
