95.7 "Jack FM". Is it coming?

Yesterday, KSRX-FM 102.7 San Antonio flipped formats from K-Rock to Jack, giving Austin, San Antonio, and Dallas a variety hits formatted station. With "The Wave" being the lowest rated CBS/Infinity station in the Houston market, is it next? What would Chuck do??

99.1? Why in the world would a station that's either #1 or #2 in most arbitron books switch to Jack? I have a hard time believing that.

I was thinking the same thing. Clear Channel would not even consider changing KODA to a Jack station, or any other format for that matter. The holiday music has served Sunny well every Christmas season, and even during the rest of the year, Sunny is consistently in the top 5. Not a chance. But I ask again....Infinity is notorious for flipping fledgling stations to Jack. Now there's Free-FM. I'm sorry, but Smooth Jazz is not the answer for the former KIKK-FM. It shows strong numbers initially, and then drops off the radar. Anyone remember KHYS trying jazz on 98.5 two different times? Just my thought, but I figure another flat book by KHJZ, and the station gets jacked or set free.

Is it the lowest CBS rated station? What about KILT-610 and KIKK-650? Are you basing all of this on 12Plus? If you are, then your assumption would be incorrect. I could be wrong, but I do not see it happening. If it does, it does. It's out of my control.

>What would Chuck do??

In the first place, I work for myself as an independant videographer. I have several projects that I am currently involved in. Secondly, I would get another parttime gig. I do not put all of my eggs in one basket.

How about 95.7 "Chuck-FM"?

Sounds like a winner to me. Who knows Houston radio and what would/wouldn't work better than Chuck?

I don't care for Jack, Bob, Neil or whatever..... but I'd tune to Chuck FM! :) Thats more fitting for Houston. I say bring it CBS Radio!

Re: How about 95.7 "Chuck-FM"?

Hmmmmmmmmmm, let's see. I could try and coax Chuck Joseph(KILT/KLDE/KNUZ/KIKK...long list)out of retirement. Chuck "Baby" Adams from the old days of Rock n Roll at KNUZ would be great, too.

Colonel Chuck St. James
Chuck Thomas Fontaine
Chuck Dano Gallo
And maybe even Chuck Tiller.

I'm sorry, I meant to say the lowest rated FM station owned by CBS at this time. Yes it is based on the 12+ that were released last week and I hope your right that it doesn't happen. Speculation, as always, runs wild. I started this thread to get thoughts from experienced radio personnel on whether or not they thought this would be a strategic move for CBS here in Houston or just daydreaming on my part. Your opinion is what I expected, and was hoping for, because you work for the station. I would think that you have a heck of a lot more knowledge about what's going on at the company that you work for than I ever would. I would hate to see yourself, Larry Jones, Donna McKenzie, and the others lose their jobs for another damn jukebox on the FM dial.

You don't have to, Chuck. Your name is synonymous with Houston radio. I am sure that you would have absolutely no problem finding another parttime airshift rather quickly.

Chuck, just to pick your brain, if you were to lose your job with The Wave, what station in Houston would you really like to work for? Would you rather go back to a station that you've worked for previously, or try an entirely new direction? Personally I think you'd be a tremendous acquisition for KLDE. IMO, it hasn't been quite the same feel in the PM, since the departure of the Colonel.

Which was orginally the former Cool Jazz 95.7 KHUL.

>It shows strong numbers initially, and then drops off the radar.

Incorrect. It's demos are still in good shape. More importantly, it has great billing

> Anyone remember KHYS trying jazz on 98.5 two different times?

Incorrect, again. I was there when it was on 2 frequencies, 98.5 and 103.3. You maybe thinking of Smooth Jazz 106.9. 106.9, 98.5 and 103.3 all had one thing in common, they were rimshots and could not get the signals into the buildings much less cover Houston, properly. By the way, this was before 106.9 moved closer and got on a taller tower because of Salem's efforts.

My man, I, too, am a native Houstonian. This city is also my passion and my love. There is no place like it. I will be 55 years old and have 2 sons, one is 25 and the other is 20. If you count my other 'son,' Tom Fontaine is 37.

When I'm through, I am going into a chicken franchise:

"Chuck's Frickken Chicken" Special of the day "Chuck's Fricken Chicken Frickasie" (Mispelled purposely for marketing reasons)

KLDE seems to be going for more of a "Gold AC" sound like Sunny 104-5 in Philly - full service in drive time, music intensive otherwise.

I believe I can post the following. It's available to the public at: http://www.radioandrecords.com/

KHJZ/Houston 2.4 2.3 18th* (13th 25-54; seventh 35-64)

The 35-64 demos are good, but I feel that the station has gotten stale and will continue it's slide in the ratings. I still believe by summer CBS Radio will have a new format on 95.7 and agressively go after the 18-35 demo. KODA will continue to hold on to many of the listeners from the month plus of Christmas music. Sunny has a strong hold on the "easy listening" of today and it will be very difficult for any station to compete with them. Smooth Jazz is close enough to Sunny to be a competitor and as with all the other ex Smooth Jazz stations will drop in the ratings to the point that a format change will occur.

There are many other English language formats not represented in Houston that will pull much higher numbers than The Wave. "Chuck Radio" may well be one of the formats.
