95.7 the game

I am an out of state listener, but I listen to 95.7 The Game on occasion, and I'm wondering? why can't this station gain more ground in San Fran? 92.3 the fan in Cleveland has been around just under a month less than The Game, and in their march ratings book, they are at a 1.9. KGMZ has not even broken past 1.0! of course, any challenger to KNBR 680 was going to have a challenge. so, my question is, what's going on? is it something programming related? will it take more time to take down KNBR(if at all)? Any replies are appreciated.

IMHO, I've tired of this station. The little I've heard of the morning show, which was good wjen I heard it. But the rest of the stations air personalities, to me, get annoying. Am I listening to 'The Game' or 'The Drive'

The afternoon show's name is called 'The Drive'. When they go to commercial they sometimes just say, "You're listening to 'The Drive' "

But the personalities talk over each other, trying to hard to be liked. So I change to something else. They try hard to make an A's game exciting. But to no avail.

Never EVER call it "San Fran". That's like saying "Bost" or "New Yor" or "Chicag". It's offensive.

I've never understood why people are offended by "San Fran" or "Frisco." Big fat hairy deal. As a kid growing up in L.A...uh, I mean Los Angeles, I remember being aware of the rivalry with San Francisco...Dodgers versus Giants, Herb Caen versus LA Times columnist Jim Murray, etc.

I remember thinking that San Franciscans took themselves WAY too seriously.

I keep hearing people refer to "San Ho" (San Jose). Now that could be considered borderline offensive.

For a lot of us, "Frisco" is no problem.

"SF" is a little touchy, but mainly because it's just not used. "LA" rolls off the tongue. But regional differences are important to people. Remember the discussions here about "101" and "The 101"? Same thing applies here. People prefer the regional oddities they grew up with. Likewise, the Pleasanton area street is pronounced "burr-NALL" whereas the exact same name of the San Francisco neighborhood is pronounced "BURR-null" Heights. And likewise, the Walnut creek street is "ig-NAY-she-oh" Valley Road, but the town in Marin is pronounced "ig-NAH-see-oh".

I'm from the Fillmore and we grew up saying Frisco. I'm a 5th Gen Native San Franciscan born at UCSF. Will you walk through Fillmore and tell people who stop saying Frisco? Doubt it. You must be a transplant.

On that note. The Morning show at 95.7 the game is annoying. The Questions for Kriedler thing is ridiculous and an exhibit of condescending trash talk with one another. The way they talk to that guy Kriedler would have me walking off if I were him. He gets bullied live on air as the nerdy know it all. He is whiny and all that but enough already. The Drive is just Eric and Brandon arguing all show. With that said, I like 95.7 better than KNBR which is nothing but Giants talk 365

I think the signal is the game's downfall, I still think they need a AM station, even though some people say that AM is useless

No, I'm a native. But you all have a good point; it's funny how different people who live here have different takes on which nickname is cool and which isn't. And I was only half-serious anyways, which is why I put the winky smile in there...

I was told 'Frisco was a no-no because it sounded too much like Fresno.

San Fran is a abbreviation that I have always heard for San Francisco growing up, especially while following sports. No malice, spite, ill will, or contempt was meant by that. if you were offended(especially since I am not a local), I apologize. to the one poster who responded, If you were going to shorten New York, you would just say "NY". also, for a brief second, I thought I was going to mis-spell San Francisco(imagine what you would have thought about that?), so that's why I went with....well you read the post. real quick. what are your thoughts on the WheelHouse? that's the show I get to listen to the most.

I have never heard of the program. I assume it's on a sports station? The only sports I listen to are the Giants play by play, hopefully with Jon Miller and Dave Flemming.

Should have been more specific. does anyone on this board listen to the WheelHouse on 95.7 The Game with John Lund and rotating hosts. it's the one show I consistently check out. it is apparent most of you have some issue with the morning show, and The Drive isn't tickling your feet.

My problem with "The Game" is that it's far more focused on attitude than content.

I'm sick to death of the KNBR-bashing promos, which they FINALLY seem to have slowed down on. I could understand a few of those when they first went on the air but going on this long with them non-stop is ridiculous and doesn't reflect well on them. Talk about how good your own programming is instead. Their hosts are far more interested in "personality" than intelligent conversation. The morning show is ok, but the bits are stale now and it's basically the same show every day. The Wheelhouse is hit or miss to me. Brandon Tierney is just annoying on "The Drive". He constantly is throwing in references to his east coast background and always seeming to hint at a "New York is what it's really all about" attitude. And the self-serving "good jobs" to the other on-air talent sounds more like just part of his schtick. Schtick is a good work, Tierney seems full of schtick. (pun not intended) I can't listen to Townsend, he ALWAYS sounds like he's yelling. And wtf is this with everyone at the station calling him "Uncle Towney". The guy's maybe 40 years old (in the same ballpark as everyone else at the station) and they make him out to be the fatherly figure of the station for some reason that eludes me. I also notice they barely take any phone calls on their shows, which might be partically because no one is calling, but they're also touted that that's also part of their way of doing things. I get bored listening to just the hosts talking non-stop, invariably going in circles with each other. The callers help mix things up.

I did participate in the station's recent "Big Break" contest (a chance to win an on-air contract) and that process further convinced me this station is far too concerned with attitude rather than content. I heard the eventually winner ("The Guru") doing a show during the Sharks playoffs and he constantly talked about "Coach McKellen". At least know the names of the people you're talking about. All the personality in the world won't keep people listening if you don't have a clue what you're talking about.

Bottom line, all personality with little intelligent content gets old.

They need to start taking more calls if they want to stay relevant. I like them OK but I"m getting bored hearing them always argue with one another all show. It started off with mainly Eric Davis & Tierny going back and forth in arguments, now it's spread to every show. Especially the morning show with the Kriedler thing I'm very tired hearing all the "that's a question for Krieds, Krieds me a River, Fact or Fantasy, that kind of stuff should be weekly or monthly not daily.

Contrary to the need for more calls/callers...most listeners prefer to hear from the hosts/experts and not other callers.

Callers can add to a program, but relying on them is lazy radio, and more important bad radio.

95.7's issues are not because of a lack of caller/caller interaction...

In part they like mentioned prior are too hung up on trying to take shots at the competition instead of focusing on themselves.

Again listeners do not care about or for another station bashing competitors..that is radio from the 80's and 90's...and it does not work.

Focus on yourself...because ironically like in sports, when you focus too much on your opponent's game instead of your own, then they already have you beat from the shoulders up.

I'm not suggesting they *rely* on callers, but they seem to almost have a disdain for them. One of their promos actually talked about how they don't take calls so much because they're lame (not in those words of course). So right there you're basically saying your listeners are lame. Not a great marketing strategy. My issue is that if you are repeating your same issues and arguments a billion times over, you probably need to mix it up a little bit, and the callers help do that. I'm also not sure people want to hear the hosts blabber non-stop, and not sure I'd necessarily view them as "experts". They have an opinion and some talent communicating that opinion, but they aren't necessarly a lot more knowledgeable than many sports fans. Eric Davis certainly would be more of an expert talking about football, but I don't value his opinion on hockey any more than a guy sitting next to me at a sports bar.

Also a billion percent agree that the morning show bits should be weekly, not daily. By doing it every day it gets old quickly. And the "word of the day" thing is completely moronic, like something high school (or junior high?) kids would come up with.
