95.9 THE EDGE TERRE HAUTE

My sixth sense tells me that "The Edge" is coming to Terre Haute. Okay, maybe it's not as much a sixth sense is that I am one hell of a good investigator. A logo and website have both been "registered" by Midwest Communications of Terre Haute Indiana.

Oh, 1300 is going Fox Sports too...that is a very stupid move, but what do I know?

Isn't "The Edge" brand already used in Terre Haute on 90.7?

Emmis is buying the Brazil 92.7 and 1130 AM. David Crooks is buying Rockville. Emmis had a deal for 102.7 but could not come up with the cash a month or so ago, so now they have an agreement to buy the Brazil rim-shots. That will give Emmis two Clas A signals and one Class B Midwest will have three class B signals at 50KW and one Class A dog at 95.9 once they close on 102.7 Crossroads took a big haircut on the sale of 102.7. Paid around 2.7 million for it, and Midwest picks it up for around 1.3 million. The Crossroads mess was started by Mike Peterson.

Not sure how accurate this all is, but I heard from "a friend who heard from a friend" that works at Crossroads that there are some issues that could hold up some of the sales. Namely, the tower in Brazil for WSDM is in horrendous condition. Also, none of the Crossroads stations have paid any ASCAP or BMI fees in over 7 years, and they could block the sale until paid. I didn't hear an exact dollar amount on what is owed, but one has to figure it is over 200k for the 3 FM stations (ESPN played music as the Crock for several years). Also, it sounds like most of the air staff at this time will be out jobs. Midwest is taking some of the sales staff, but no on-air staff. No word about Emmis, as that sale agreement has yet to be announced. Again, I heard all of this second/third hand, but have no reason to doubt my friend's source.

Also the source said the FCC Owenership report due 12-1-11 has yet to be filed. I was able to verify this information on the FCC website. Nothing happens until that is done.

I've no radio experience...so how dumb do you have to be to run a radio station into the ground?

No dumber than you have to be to run an Italian restaurant into the ground. Crossroads was never able to make WBOW-FM work. and that became their downfall.

It's odd that the attorney who filed the transfer application hasn't filed the ownership report. There's nothing special about it. As to ASCAP or BMI, they really don't have the power to block anything at the FCC level. All ASCAP or BMI can do is file a lawsuit for whatever money they may be owed. The FCC isn't going to hold up a transfer to appease a music licensing firm.

Crossroads had a chance to make it in this market but refused to pay the price for qualified broadcasters to operate the radio station (s) and give them a "fighting" chance. Dan Lacy and his "management" team had no business being in the broadcasting business. Poor leadership is not the way to win! I am sorry for there are a few talented people at CR that deserve to be on the air and have worked hard to try and improve the station (s). The work of a few cannot bring the rest of the non talented staff up to speed.

Well said. Feel terrible for people like Jules, Party Marty, Kyle West, and Doc Long who are talented folks who have done a lot of work on the air and a lot of extra work in the community for several years. Even the local sports show with Vaso on 92.7/1300 is much better than it has been in a long time. Hope they all catch on somewhere, would be a shame to lose all of that homegrown talent.

The reason for not filing the ownership report at Crossroads is that Mike Peterson had contolling interest in Crossroads but left some time ago. The problem is the contro of ownership was never filed or approved at the FCC! This might be an illegal tranfer of control that could slow things down and probably get Crossroads a fine. What a dumb outfit. Transfer of Control issues are big at the FCC.

WBOW as the only mainstream AC in the market should have been an easy sell. Crossroads overpaid and then mismanaged this asset. Hopefully once the new ownership takes over, the format stays the same with much improved execution.

Bingo, you are correct...the EDGE is trademarked by Jacobs. But see, thats why you pay the fees like they are in Lansing to carry the name.

I did hear about Emmis and the Class A. The rumor I heard was well south of a Million, wonder what they would put on that signal? CHR to compete with WMGI?

As for Midwest having the bigger signals in the market...great! Do they know how to run them?

Emmis is a top brass company that hires great individuals and lets them do magic.

WMGI sounds better than ever before, especially with their mornings and afternoon people. Bill in the morning on WWSY not so much. I think a move to THE EDGE will be good, maybe they will put on a winning morning show on the station like Free Beer and Hotwings.

I do have a suspicion that 102.7 will go Country as Duke and his boys want a bite out of the Jeff and family.

I imagine for now Emmis leaves ESPN on the signal, maybe move the Colts over from The River. But, if Midwest takes 102.7 to Country, I could see them using 92.7 to program a Hot A/C or a CHR against WMGI.

I'm not sold on Midwest launching country on 102.7. They had one decent book on 98.5 when it was a country station, but failed miserably trying to sell advertising on the station. How silly would they look if they tried country a second time and failed again?

I agree, it doesn't make any sense to go country unless they think they could replicate WNCY here or something. That is my only guess, since they are hiring full-time staff around the clock on that station.

WBOW-AM is going Fox Sports Radio.

I would go Classic Country to protect my two current station. You could move Colts there and it would sound fine.
