I just want to state That I have really enjoyed listening to Sam on
WATD when he has been on. And of course, the great job he has done
WBCN free form rock on HD. A very good mix of music.

Is he still on WATD? I haven't heard him in a while. What they had on today was awful.

WATD has not updated their website. Sam left WATD two weeks ago.

He is concentrating on his "WBCN Free Form Rock" station, streaming at http://www.wbcn.com (click on the "Free Form BCN" link on the left side of the page), and on 100.7 HD3. He will be on live today from 4:00 - 8:00 (+?) PM.

He is also planning to be on live mid-days Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays 11 AM - 2 PM, and to continue doing the live Friday late afternoon (4 PM) to early evening slot to start the weekends.

Tuesday mid-days 11 AM - 2 PM is a new (but good!) DJ named Destiny Curtis (yes, that's her real name). It remains automated the rest of the time for now.

Sam is also almost finished completing converting a school bus into a mobile studio, and is planning to take some live "WBCN Free Form Rock" broadcasts remote on the road soon.

One would hope that CBS provided financial support for the mobile-studio conversion. Doesn't seem right that such a big and profitable company would leave it to the talent to provide the funding.

I'm really not sure, but I don't believe they did. Though I think Sam is paid *something* to oversee the channel, I don't think that CBS originally had intended it to be anything more than most other HD subchannels - a themed niche automated music mix, in this case music reminiscent of WBCN's decades of history as a rock station, programmed by Sam (WBCN's first long-term rock program director).

Sam (and others as volunteers) hosting live, so far from a makeshift studio in Sam's basement that feeds to the HD and internet stream (and overrides the automation when live), was all Sam's idea, and so was this mobile bus studio, which I believe he has set up with largely donated equipment and volunteer help.

Broadcasting companies are putting little money into most HD radio (and streaming) subchannels, because there are not enough people listening to attract many sponsors, but they aren't going to attract much of an audience without compelling live content and just a repeating automated mix. It's a classic "Catch-22". Sam is trying to sidestep this by taking the development of it into his own hands.

They should just bite the bullet and go all 50's. Those two guys on Saturday night are great, not some radio 'puker' playing soft AC :)

I would be great if WBOQ picked up this show Sat. 6:00 - Mid. for the North Shore.
