95.9 WSPO now country

Yes WSPO 95.9 is now calling its self kicking 959 playing country.
It sounds like WEZL or the wolf.
Question time, is this a stunt? can Charleston really support 3 country stations?
how soon does the wolf flip if this is not a stunt from 95.9?

I must correct myself,
WIOP not WSPO.
and it sounds like crap.
They claim country variety but it is the same songs you would hear on the other two stations!

Whaaaaaaaaaaaat? They just re-imaged and hired Bill Shannon and Kain Cameron! They are now "Kickin' 95.9, Real Country Variety."

If this is true...maybe Citadel will put WTMA on 96.9. Chas. can't support 3 country stations. Guess it's back to Y102.5 and Chuck FM for classic hits fans?

Wow, Apex is going after everybody. 3 country stations in Chucktown is over board, especially if all 3 are playing the same. IMO, 95.9 could've went Pop since im sure 95SX is gaining. However, I assume they're done with that format since B92 was no good. Apex must be trying to knock WEZL out of the #1 spot that STAR 99.7 once had, but the 12+ has them at #3. Urban, Urban AC and Country rates top 3 in Chucktown and now Apex operates stations with all 3 formats.

Good point. They sure didn't let 959IOP last long, I feel bad for Kain and Bill.

96.9 will be the next casualty. WTMA-FM would be good since talk is going to FM and their competition has been on FM. Cost saving too.

Just hate to see IOP gone so soon.

I can't believe this. Poor Bill Shannon and Kain Cameron, who barely lasted four months. That was the best oldies station in the Carolinas, in my opinion. They had good personalities and were good in the community.

I was hearing them in many different places. Coffee shops, dentist offices, barbers, who all enjoyed the music mix. Some people will be really mad in the morning.

Why does Charleston need a third FM country when most people can already pick up at least two to four fringe stations? This is a horrible move. I guess they're trying to protect 101.7, which still doesn't have any personalities.

They just changed their slogan too and got a new voice guy. Apparently, they flipped at noon. None of Apex's moves have made sense lately. They took all the good national shows off WSPO for lame college football talk, this station, and 101.7 still not having any personalities.

I just can't believe this has happened. The country station isn't even anything decent/exciting.

It'll just mean Wolf and WEZL will step it up even more. While listening online I heard they have 52 min of music every hour. When I heard that doesn't Wolf do 96 min worth of country music.

Also a question about 96.9 The Wolf did some of their djs leave or go to WEZL? As I checked the website and I see some new people I would say. Anyone know who used to do middays? And I also know they changed the evening after 7pm around.

greenville tried a 3rd country in 1995 when ownerships were different and it failed miserably. it is now 93.3 playing rock music. a 3rd country in chas-town is even more hilarious

All i have to say is WTF????? What is Apex thinking? Where will Charleston listeners go for classic hits AGAIN? My idea, put CLASSIC HITS on 101.7! This is sickening.

Im surprised a lot of you believe 96.9 The Wolf will lose because of this new country station. Who says this new country station will make it?

96.9 is doing nothing as it is, how can they grow any further with a third one wanting a piece of the pie? The market can't support 3 country stations. Very few can. It was barely supporting 2. Insanity. Maybe Citadel should try classic hits on 96.9 if not talk.

I always forget WTPT was country. They did it to protect then-sister station WESC. Country is undoubtedly popular in Greenville but I don't think it would do as well if Clear didn't have the two stations focused differently like they do.

Charleston is a mixed market with many different types of people from all around the country listening to different stations. I agree that Charleston is not the market for three country formated stations if they are basicly the same format. If 95.9 goes to a traditional country mix that would help it stand apart from the rest but with the mix of different types of people in the Charleston market would the segment of listeners be great enough to support the new station format, I am not so sure but then again look at Jacksonville, FL they generally have 3 to 4 country formatted station all the time and have for years so who knows. I really liked the format and sound that 95.9 had and I don't think they gave it much of a chance to suceed so who knows what they are thinking now, I don't.

With 95.9 country now, is 96.9 really needed to serve its purpose anymore? Wasn't it always to keep WEZL out of the top spot for Z93 or something?

Y102.5 is playing a ton of older stuff from the 70s and 80s, I even heard them playing a 60s song. I heard them run a liner that "Nobody plays more 70s" when I was listening online. Undoubtedly they are going for the IOP audience. Pretty wide variety and some songs you wouldn't expect to hear on an AC station.

I e-mailed Apex's GM (they are a local company) and this is what he said.

First I want to thank you for emailing me to offer your comments and feedback about our format change on WIOP. We understand and appreciate your loyalty to the former format. It is always difficult to make these changes because all radio stations, regardless of their ultimate level of success or failure, have a loyal listener base.

Over the years Apex has made a number of changes in our competitive battles with the national radio companies that operate in this market, namely Clear Channel Communications (based in San Antonio, TX) and Citadel Communication (based in New York city). As a small, privately owned, locally based company here in Charleston , we have had to carve our success out of this very competitive environment and that has dictated our approach to format decisions. We have grown from about 5% of the radio listeners in the market using our stations to close to 30%, which is on par with, or better than, our nationally based competitors. Although not popular with everyone, we believe that the change to WIOP will also prove to be as popular as our other format offerings.

Feedback and comments from listeners are important to us, so again, thank you for your input. It is appreciated.

Apex wants the #1 spot back! Maybe KICKIN 95.9 will knock WEZL out of the top 3 putting STAR 99.7 back at the top since they've taken out MAGIC 107.3. 92.5 The BOX is battling Z93 JAMZ so at the end of the day it all makes since (to me). Does anyone agree???

THE BOX isn't breaking out new music quick enough Z is still ahead of them in that. I hear local artist promoting The BOX but I don't hear their music on playing on there.

I hope they give THE BOX a chance--I don't want to turn it on one day and hear the Kidz Bop verison of a Justin Bieber song playing (lol).
